SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball fell 82-75 Thursday night to Notre Dame de Namur in its final home game of the 2019-20 season at the Conlan Center.
Junior guard
Jordan Williams led the Penguins (6-21, 6-15 PacWest) with 23 points, five assists and four rebounds. Junior guard
Jaelen Ragsdale added 19 points, while senior forward
Lazar Djurovic added 18 points and five rebounds. Trevor Thompson led the Argonauts (4-23, 3-18 PacWest) with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Ajay Singh added 24 points and seven rebounds.
Cameron Fisher and Thompson knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to spark an early 10-0 run for NDNU as they took a seven point lead with 15:15 remaining in the half. Thompson then knocked down two more shots behind the arc in an 8-point run that made it 20-7 NDNU with 13 minutes until the break.
Williams helped the Penguins correct the ship as he knocked down two 3-pointers to bracket a steal and a fastbreak layup to cut the deficit to seven. After a jumper by Carl Snyder, Williams kept rolling as his third 3-pointer capped the 13-2 run to make it 24-20 with 8:26 remaining and forced an NDNU timeout.
Snyder knocked down a 3-pointer to highlight a 7-0 Argonaut run out of the timeout as they extended the lead back to double-digits, but the Penguins would not go away on the back of some strong defensive play. Djurovic drained a 3-pointer and Williams got a steal and threw it ahead to Ragsdale for a dunk to quickly trim the deficit to five.
The teams continued to trade points with the Penguins slowly gaining ground as Djurovic got loose down low for a layup to cut the NDNU lead to 39-36 with 3:44 remaining. Djurovic hit his second 3-pointer off a beautiful assist from Williams to cut the deficit to one, but Singh hit a short jumper to make it 44-41 Argonauts at the break.
After trading points for the first three minutes, Williams kicked the ball to Ragsdale in the corner for a 3-pointer to tie the game at 48 with 16 minutes remaining. Singh hit a midrange jumper from the baseline to slow the Dominican momentum and then found Snyder underneath for a layup to spark a 7-0 run.
NDNU continued to slowly add to their lead and an offensive rebound and putback by Snyder made it 68-55 with 8:24 remaining in the game. Dominican continued to battle as
Sam Averbuck hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the deficit back to 10 heading into the final four minutes.
Dominican was unable to get any closer than seven points in the closing seconds as NDNU held on from the free-throw line.
