IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomore guard
Camryn Figueroa exploded for 10 points in the final five minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime as Dominican women's basketball upset Concordia University Irvine 82-78 Monday night at CU arena.
Senior forward
Jerusha Paine led the Penguins (10-15, 7-12 PacWest) with 30 points and 12 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. Figueroa added 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field, while freshman guard
Brittney Cedeno added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Lainie James led the Eagles (14-9, 12-6 PacWest) with 24 points and six rebounds, while Michaela Vanderklugt finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out in the final minutes of overtime.
Vanderklugt once again helped the Eagles grab some momentum as she scored the first four points of a 6-0 run to push the lead to nine and Kennedy Fulcher knocked down a 3-pointer minutes later to make it 67-57 with 4:31 remaining. Figueroa took charge of the game from that point finishing through contact for a 3-point play to start a 12-2 run as she scored her 10th point of the run pulling up for a jumper with 54 seconds remaining to tie the game. Both teams had chances to win the game in the final seconds that resulted in turnovers the last of which came for Cedeno who picked off an inbounds pass and put up a heave at the buzzer that was just off target to send the game to overtime.
Dominican got off to a strong start as Paine controlled the offensive paint to spark a 6-2 opening run with four points inside. Fulcher got loose for a fastbreak layup for the Eagles to cut the lead to one and the teams began to trade buckets in a close game. After Vanderklugt gave CUI a lead, Cedeno knocked down a 3-pointer from the elbow to swing the momentum back to the Penguins.
The Eagles took a 16-13 lead into the second and were able to push it to as many as four. Cedeno sparked a quick 5-point run with another 3-pointer and
Camryn Figueroa lobbed a ball over the defense to an open Paine for a layup to take the 26-23 lead at the midway point of the quarter. Vanderklugt capped the CUI response with a 3-pointer of her own and Katie Timmerman pushed the lead to five with 2:16 left on the clock with a short jumper.
Marisa Mondave knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Figueroa spun to the basket for a layup to quickly tie the game, but James beat the buzzer on a short jumper to keep the Eagles ahead 36-34 at the half.
Vanderklugt helped CUI grab the momentum in the second half as she scored the final six points in an 8-0 run to give the Eagles a 44-36 lead with 6:33 left in the third quarter. The Penguins slowly cut into the lead as back-to-back layups from Paine made it 48-46 with two minutes left, but James knocked down a 3-pointer to slow their momentum.
The Penguins took advantage of an overaggressive Eagles team in overtime as they took a 75-71 lead on free throws as Vanderklugt fouled out with 2:27 remaining. James provided the response hitting a 3-pointer from the right elbow to cut the lead to one as the teams headed to the final minute. Jasmine Rachal knocked down a pair of free throws to take a 78-77 lead with 36 seconds remaining, but Figueroa ducked under a screen from Paine and made a tough left-handed layup to retake the 1-point advantage with 23 seconds remaining. Fulcher took an open 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 10 seconds, but the ball bounced off the iron and into Figueroa's arms for the rebounds. After Cedeno knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three, Rachal missed an off-balance 3-pointer and the ball went out of bounds to give the Penguins the ball back to seal it from the line.
Dominican will return home to host Azusa Pacific for the 20th Anniversary of the Conlan Center Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PST. Live video and stats will be available online.
