Paine sets Dominican record in win

OAKLAND, Calif. – Senior forward Jerusha Paine poured in a Dominican women's basketball NCAA Division II era record 44 points in an 87-60 victory over Holy Names University Saturday evening at Tobin Gymnasium.

Paine broke Sandra Ikeora's record of 43 points scored against Academy of Art in 2017 and she added 14 rebounds to finish with her sixth double-double of the season. Senior guard Marisa Mondave added 13 points for the Penguins (5-7, 2-4 PacWest) and the Penguins shot 50.9% from the field.

Elle Burland scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Hawks (0-6, 0-10 PacWest), while Monica Valanzuela chipped in nine points. Dominican held HNU to 21.4% shooting from the field to go with 14 steals on the night.

After trading buckets for the first six minutes of the game, Mondave knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Penguins back on top. Dominican's defense stepped up and forced three straight turnovers resulting in five points from Paine as the 12-1 run spanned the next five minutes to give Dominican the 21-12 lead on the first bucket of the second quarter.

After the Hawks cut the deficit to five, Camryn Figueroa drove the lane for a layup and added a steal and score in a 9-0 run that made it 30-16 with seven minutes left in the half. Julia Razo knocked down her first 3-pointer of the game with 4:33 left on the clock to give the Penguins a large lead of 17 in the first half and they went into the break leading 39-24.

Paine hit a pair of layups to bracket a 3-pointer from Mondave to open the second half as Dominican pushed the lead to 20 at 48-28 with 6:57 left in the third quarter. Paine continued to dominate the paint and the Penguins defense continued to force Holy Names' turnovers as they pushed the lead to 29 on a crazy sequence beginning with Jessica Armstrong getting a rebound and putback through contact followed by a technical foul, three free-throw makes and the Penguins retaining ball possession. Paine then knocked in a midrange jumper to end the sequence and make it 60-31 with 2:41 left in the period.

Dominican entered the final period leading 67-33 and traded baskets with the Hawks for much of the quarter. Paine's record-breaking basket came as she spun around her defender for a layup followed by a free throw for the old-fashioned 3-point play.

The Penguins will head to the islands of Hawai'i for three games beginning Thursday at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo beginning at 5 p.m. HST at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Live stats and video will be available online.
