Penguins Dominate Argonauts

BELMONT, Calif.—Dominican men's basketball erupted offensively, while holding Notre Dame de Namur to just 38.3% shooting from the field, earning a 72-56 victory over the Argonauts at Walter Gleason Gymnasium.

Jaelen Ragsdale and Lazar Djurovic led all scorers with 15 points apiece. Ragsdale made 6-of-8 from the field and added three rebounds and an assist, while Djurovic brought down five rebounds and logged three assists. Romeo Mays earned a double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 points, while also making his way to the foul line to sink 5-of-7 to help Dominican (4-13, 4-7 PacWest) earn their second win in a row.

Notre Dame de Namur's Ajay Singh led the Argos (2-17, 1-11 PacWest) with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and one steal. Along with Singh, Carl Snyder was the only other Argo to reach double digits offensively, recording 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks. NDNU also struggled to get to the foul line, finishing the game just 1-of-3 from the charity stripe.

After the first five minutes of regulation, Ragsdale connected with Djurovic in the paint to extend Dominican's lead to 12-8. Snyder retaliated with a three from the top of the arc to cut the Argos' deficit to just one. From there, Djurovic forced his way into the paint once more for a hook shot, sparking the Penguins' 16-4 run. Thomas Faustka capped off the run by blocking a shot from Singh and passing it ahead to Chase Anderson for a pullup jumper to give the Penguins a 28-15 lead with 7:35 left to go in the half. Singh found redemption on the next Argo possession, sinking a three pointer to come within 10 of the Penguins, but Ragsdale went on a 9-point run of his own, making three straight three-pointers to boost Dominican's lead back to 39-21. With 1:29 left in the first half, Djurovic connected with Sam Averbuck in the paint for a layup off the glass to extend Dominican's lead to 20, with a 43-23 advantage going into the break.

The Argos spurred a 9-1 run to begin the second half as Singh found Snyder on the perimeter for a three to cut their deficit to 12. Djurovic helped the Penguins bounce back, kicking it out to Jordan Williams beyond the three-point line for a three, and Djurovic knocked down a three of his own from the top of the arc on the following possession to extend the Penguins' lead back to 20 at 52-32 with 15:15 left to go in the second half. Dominican controlled the rest of the game, growing their lead to as many as 24 when Romeo Mays sank a three-pointer with 2:30 left on the clock to bring the score to 71-47 to solidify the victory.

The Penguins will hit the road to take on Point Loma at Golden Gymnasium this Thursday as they look to extend their winning streak. Live video and stats will be available online.
