Penguins earn first result against ranked team

SAN RAFAEL, Calif— Dominican men's soccer earned its first result against a ranked team as they tied No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino 2-2 Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins' (1-3-1) sophomore goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza proved to be the player of the game with 12 saves on the day against a strong Coyote squad (2-0-1). Seniors Luke Raley and Arturo Carrillo Contreras each added a goal for the Penguins and traded assists in the Coyotes defensive quarter.

Cal State San Bernardino's Jacob Huber recorded three saves while the Coyotes worked from behind to tie Dominican with the help of goals from Jonathan Garcia and Tony di Donato.

Dominican made their mark early in the game as Carrillo Contreras shook his defender outside the left corner of the box, and sent a high cross to Raley, storming into the box to head it into the top right corner, giving the Penguins the 1-0 lead 4:23 into the game.

The Coyotes quickly turned the tide as Jeronimo Valdepena raced down the right side and crossed it to Pedro Arellano for a shot in the box, but Raygoza made a diving save toward the left post.

In the 20th minute CSUSB pressured the backline once more as Garcia pelted a shot on goal, but Cameron Baca was in the right place at the right time to block the shot within the box. After a series of corner kicks and attacks from the Coyotes, Frank Daroma connected with Brandon Sangbarani who sent a header inches above the crossbar to keep the score 1-0.

In the 32nd minute, Luke Raley took a throw-in, beat his defender and sent a pass to Carrillo Contreras to return the earlier favor as Carrillo Contreras put his first touch into the top-left corner of the net to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

The Coyotes began the second half flooding Dominican's backfield in an effort to erase the deficit, and they did just that. In the 51st minute, Valdepena led Garcia behind the defense with a perfectly placed pass and Garcia beat Raygoza one-on-one for the goal. One minute later Andres Aguirre began some nice triangular passing finding Garcia near the top of the box who back-heeled the ball to di Donato for a perfectly placed shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net for the equalizer.

The Penguins and Coyotes traded attempts throughout the course of the second half, but neither could land a game-winner, sending the game into overtime and a second overtime. The best chance of scoring from either team in late minutes came from Raley in the 88th minute, as Kieran Vrklan beat his defender down the right side and crossed the ball to Raley in the box, but the header went inches over the crossbar.

The Penguins return to Kennelly Field Saturday to face Northwest Nazarene University at noon PDT. In celebration of Marin FC Day, all players wearing a Marin FC jersey to Saturday's game will receive free admission. Live video and stats will also be available online.
