SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Freshman outside hitter
Tiffany Wong continued to impress early in her career, but it was not enough as Dominican women's volleyball fell 17-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 15-11 to Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday night at the Conlan Center.
Wong tied a single match record in the Penguins' (0-7, 0-1 PacWest) NCAA Division II era with 26 kills, while tallying her third straight double-double adding 11 digs.
Jessica Jones had 26 kills for the Penguins against Hawaii Hilo in 2012 and Gabby Pecora had 26 against Humboldt State in 2009. Sophomore outside hitter
Mariah Ahid added six kills, four blocks and 11 digs for Dominican.
Diamond Hollis led three Argonauts (2-6, 1-0 PacWest) in double-digit kills with 14 to go with 15 digs. Samantha Shaffer added 11 kills and 30 digs for NDNU.
Shaffer got the Argonauts off to a strong start with back-to-back kills to give them the 5-2 lead early. Freshman middle blocker
Edee Leslie sparked the Penguins with a strong kill and juniors
Catherine Johnson and
Eleni Loizou combined for a block to help cut the deficit to 8-7. Loizou then led a 5-0 Dominican run with two kills to take a 12-10 lead. Several NDNU errors then propelled Dominican to a 17-11 lead minutes later and the Penguins rode the momentum to a 25-17 victory in the first set.
Dominican kept it rolling early in the second set as sophomore setter
Haley Frederking delivered her second ace of the match to cap off a 4-0 run to begin the set. Errors gave the Argonauts some life as Hollis finished off a 6-point run with a kill to take the 11-7 lead. Destiny Williams then helped NDNU with some strong blocking in a 5-0 run to push the lead to eight and the Argonauts held off a late run by the Penguins to tie the match at a set apiece.
Wong heated up in the third set as two early kills helped build a small 7-5 advantage, but NDNU responded with three unanswered to retake the lead. Wong was there for the Penguins with three kills in a 6-point run that gave them the 13-8 lead. The Argonauts responded again with a 6-1 run to tie the set, but junior opposite
Rebecca Smith came in and provided a spark for Dominican with a kill followed by two from Wong to push the lead back to four. NDNU closed back to within one, but sophomore outside hitter
Mariah Ahid led a 4-0 run with a kill and a set sealing block assist to close out the 25-19 victory.
The error bug came back to bite Dominican in the fourth set as a 6-1 run gave the early momentum to the Argonauts. Hollis then led NDNU on another 6-1 run with two kills and a block assist to push the lead to nine. The Penguins closed the gap to five twice, but it wasn't enough as the Argonauts held on for the 25-19 set victory to send it to the fifth.
Chantal Zahrndt gave the Argonauts the early momentum with two kills in a set opening 8-2 run. The Penguins tried to chip away at the lead and Wong sparked one last 3-point burst with a kill to close the gap to 13-11, but Zahrndt ended the set like it began with two more kills for the Argonauts to seal the match victory.
Dominican will continue its homestand on Saturday as it takes on Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center. The Penguins will be celebrating Autism Awareness at the match. Live stats and video will be available online.
