Penguins close the door on 2019 season

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball closed the door on the 2019 season as it fell 4-0 and 2-0 in a doubleheader against Academy of Art University on Saturday Afternoon at Penguin Field.

Hannah Rose Balke and Cecilia Lopez each earned complete game shutouts for the Urban Knights (20-19, 16-11 PacWest). Balke led the Urban Knights to victory in game one with a one hitter, while Lopez carried the momentum into game two scattering four hits and two walks in seven innings. In the low-scoring games, Brenna Youngquist led the way offensively with a solo home run in each game to help the Knights earn a sweep over the Penguins (12-35, 9-26 PacWest).

Senior utility Karitza Reyes earned the only hit for Dominican in game one, while junior infielder Mady Christensen was the only Penguin to earn reach base multiple times.

Game One

In the top of the second inning, Youngquist put the Urban Knights in front with a lead-off home run to deep center field to open the scoring.

After two scoreless innings from both clubs, Bethany Mitchell sparked ART U in the top of the fifth with single through the left side. Gracie Sotomayor laid down a perfect bunt that spun and stopped on the first base chalk for a single.

Both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error attempting to catch Micthell at home went wide and both runs came home. After the Urban Knights loaded the bases, Youngquist hit a sac fly to right to score extend the lead to 4-0.

The game devolved into a pitching duel with only senior Dahlen Dennis reaching base safely in the final two innings.

Game Two

Academy of Art once again gained an early lead in the top of the first inning as Henderson homered to center to give Art U the 1-0 advantage. Youngquist added her second solo shot of the day in the top of the second inning again out to center field to make it 2-0.

The Penguins best scoring chance came in the bottom of the fourth as Peyton Mott and Reyes singled to put runners on the corners, but Lopez forced a groundout to end the threat. Freshman pitcher Kathryn Caravalho left two Urban Knights stranded in scoring position over the final three frames as did Lopez to secure the victory for ART U.
