Penguins sweep NDNU

BELMONT, Calif.- Dominican women's softball earned an outright sweep over Notre Dame de Namur Wednesday afternoon, ousting the Argonauts 8-1 and 12-8 at Notre Dame High School.

Junior outfielder McKenzie Schumacher led the way with a 4-for-8 performance from the plate, with 2 runs and 4 RBI. Schumacher leads the team offensively with a .372 batting average, .504 slugging percentage, and .424 on base percentage. Senior infielder Haley Cheek finished the day going 3-for-7 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Sophomore infielder Alyssa Ramirez capped off game two going 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 4 RBI, including a 2-run homer to propel the Penguins (10-31, 7-22 PacWest) over the Argonauts (3-44, 3-31 PacWest). Freshman pitcher Rosa Leguria was lights out in game one, only allowing 1 run off of 2 hits while recording a complete game.

Aurora Adams fueled the Argonaut's' offense, accounting for NDNU's only hits in game one with her 2-for-2 outing. She followed up her performance by going 2-for-4 in the second game with 1 run and 4 RBI.

Game One

Dominican came across to score first in the top of the third inning, as Alyssa Waltman led off the inning advancing to second base on an error made by Lysette Villegas in left field. With two outs and two on, Cheek earned a single through the infield, scoring both runners to give Dominican a 2-0 lead. On what should have been a routine ground ball for the third out of the inning, Melissa Garcia bobbled the throw in to second base, extending the inning for the Penguins. Ramirez capitalized by knocking in Cheek from second with a single up the middle. In an attempted to steal second, Ramirez was caught in a pickle in the base path, but not before Dennis ran across the plate to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Penguins came back for more with another two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Waltman sparked the run with another single to left field that got away from Villegas, and took second on the play. Another Argonaut error from Lauryn Zabat at third landed Mady Christensen aboard, who stole second in the following at-bat to move both runners into scoring position. McKenzie Schumacher came through in the clutch, driving the ball through the infield to score both baserunners to extend the Dominican's lead to 6-0.

NDNU cut the deficit by one in the bottom half of the fourth as Jules Keeney drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a ground out from Elizabeth Santoyo. Aurora Adams followed by drilling a double to the fence to bring across Keeney to score.

In the top of the sixth Waltman led off with a double, and Schumacher kept her hot streak alive by stretching her legs for a triple to score Waltman. Mott sustained the momentum with a single to allow Schumacher to score, extending the Penguins' lead to 8-1. The Penguins held the Argonauts scoreless throughout the end of the game to earn the victory.

Game Two

The Argonauts came out firing in the bottom of the first inning, as two straight singles from Megan Lawson and Zabat set up Adams for a 2-run base hit to put NDNU in the lead, 2-0. But Waltman was able to quickly disperse the rally, retiring the next three batters to get out of the jam.

The Penguins and Argonauts were locked in for three scoreless innings, until the Penguins broke the game open in the top of the fifth. Karitza Reyes and Waltman hit back-to-back doubles to cut the Penguin deficit to 2-1. With two outs, the Penguins combined for four straight hits, topped off with a single from Dennis that scored Cheek and Mott to give Dominican a 5-2 lead to force NDNU head coach Katlin Olesky to bring in Sophia Garcia to relieve Selena Sandoval in the circle. But Garcia couldn't slow down the Penguins as she gave up a 2-run home run to Ramirez in her first at-bat of the game, allowing DU to take a 7-2 lead.

NDNU retaliated in the bottom of the 5th as the first three batters of the inning singled through the infield, cutting their deficit to 7-3. With the bases loaded, Adams kept the momentum rolling for the Argonauts, hitting a liner to the outfield to clear the bases and bring NDNU within one run of the Penguins. Bryant capped off the run with another single through the infield, bringing in Adams from third to tie the game, 7-7.

Mott, Cheek, and Dennis drew three straight walks to load the bases for Ramirez in the top of the 6th inning. Ramirez nailed a two-run double to allow Dominican to take back the advantage. With two outs, Reyes held the pressure on the Argonauts, hitting a two-run double to clear the bases, and Waltman singled up the middle to score Reyes to put the Penguins in front, 12-7.

The Argonauts attempted a come back in the bottom half of the inning as Arzaga hit a lead-off triple and Villegas brought her in to score with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 12-8. But that would be the last run of the game as the Penguins shut out NDNU offensively, earning the sweep.

Dominican will look to build on their win streak on Saturday as they face Academy of Art University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 10 a.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
