Kaneohe, Hawai'i – Dominican women's softball suffered two 5-inning losses, 10-2 and 8-0, to Hawai'i Pacific University Monday afternoon at Howard Okita Field.
Junior infielder
Mady Christensen led the Penguins (5-12, 4-12 PacWest) from the plate with a 2-for-5 performance to move her on-base streak to seven games, while freshman outfielder
Peyton Mott collected the only extra-base hit of the day with a double in the first game.
Vanessa Porto and
Alyssa Ramirez recorded the only RBI for the Penguins.
Emilee Leonard started in the circle for the Sharks (22-16, 15-8 PacWest) in the first game and earned the victory to move to 7-5 on the year. Leonard also had a strong day from the plate going 4-for-7 with three RBI, a double and a home run. Jordan Curry (13-6) allowed just two hits from the Penguins in the shutout victory for HPU in the second game.
Game 1
The Sharks took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as they loaded the bases on a pair of fielding errors and Mary Dungey drew a walk to bring in the first run of the game. Dominican nearly escaped the inning after getting its second out on a ground ball to third, but Jordan Curry singled up the middle to bring in to more for the 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, HPU added three more runs on the board as Brandi Leong sparked the Sharks with a leadoff homer to left center. Dungey kept the momentum rolling with a double down the right-field line to force a pitching change. Ashley Iseri and Cieana Curran each singled to bring home Dungey and Curran stole second to put two more runners in scoring position. Tiana Cantero-Kawelo flied out to center to bring home Iseri from third for the 6-0 lead.
Leonard helped herself with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth to extend the HPU lead to 7-0. The Penguins finally got some offensive momentum going in the top of the fifth as Mott doubled to right field to lead off and advanced to third on a throwing error. Three straight walks from Cheek, Waltman, and Porto allowed Mott to score. Ramirez then brought home Cheek on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to five.
The Sharks wasted no time regaining their lead with five straight walks pushing the lead back to seven. Dungey then singled to the shortstop to complete the walk-off victory.
Game 2
After two and a half scoreless innings from both squads, the Sharks broke the silence as Leonard doubled to right center with two outs to score Dias and Cantero-Kawelo, but Leonard was caught trying to take third for the final out of the inning.
The Penguins held the Sharks at bay until the fifth inning when HPU broke the game wide-open. Hailey McKim drew a walk to lead off and the speedy Takara came in to pinch run. Takara advanced to third on a throwing error on pickoff attempt. Curran then singled up the middle bring her home and stole second to move into scoring position. Cantero-Kawelo singled up the middle to move Curran to third, and a ground out from Dias brought her across the plate for the 4-0 lead. Saunders, Leonard and Dungey each singled through the infield to increase the Sharks' lead to 7-0. Takara ended the game with another single down the left-field line for the 8-0 victory after five innings.
The Penguins will look to even the series as they go head-to-head with HPU tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. HST. Live video and stats will be available online.
