Penguins soar past Hawks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball overcame a slow start to pull away for a 95-52 victory Saturday evening against Holy Names University on Senior Night at the Conlan Center.

"This was a historic night for these seniors," head coach Tim Lakose said. "We've set a new record for wins [in the NCAA Division II era] and have a shot to compete for a championship at home in two weeks. We look forward to giving ourselves one final test in Southern California next week against Biola and Azusa Pacific."

Senior forward Natalie Diaz tallied her 10th 30-point game and double-double of the season with 35 points and added 13 rebounds to go with three blocks for the Penguins (20-4, 17-3 PacWest). Senior guard Alanna Scott added 21 points and five steals, while junior guard Marisa Mondave finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Anjelica Collins added a solid night with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Ariana Hernandez led the Hawks (3-24, 3-18 PacWest) with 14 points, while Elle Burland added a game-high six assists. Dominican outrebounded Holy Names 53-38 while shooting 52.1 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the arc.

Scott powered the offense in the early minutes laying it in for the first points of the game for the Penguins before knocking down a 3-pointer to cap a 7-1 run and take a 7-5 lead. Diaz then took over going on a personal 9-2 run knocking down several midrange jumpers and a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 16-9.

After Hernandez hit a 3-pointer to cut the Hawks deficit to four, Dominican's defense picked up the intensity as Scott stole the ball away and found Collins on the other end for a layup to start a run. Diaz blocked Martin Gernijah's layup on the next possession leading to a Mondave jumper and Scott ended the run with a steal and an assist to Sydney Larocca to make it 22-12 with 54 seconds left in the quarter.

The Penguins started the second period strong with an 8-2 run, taking a 30-16 lead after Mondave and Scott sank back-to-back 3-pointers. Diaz again took over the game leading an 11-1 run with nine points and a block to extend the lead to 22. Hernandez knocked down a pair of corner 3-pointers late for HNU to trim the lead to 47-30 at the half.

Mondave sank a jumper through contact early in the second half and Diaz collected an offensive rebound on her missed free throw before going up for a layup to highlight an early 10-1 run powered by the two Penguins. Dominican kept the foot on the gas as Edina del Rosario knocked down a shot from behind the arc to extend the lead to 30 with 2:28 remaining in the period.

Scott started the fourth quarter on fire knocking down three consecutive 3-pointers before fellow seniors Diaz and Collins knocked down a pair of their own as Dominican pulled out to an 86-43 lead in the first five minutes of the period.

Dominican will wrap up its season on the road as it heads to Southern California to face Biola University at 5:30 p.m. PST Thursday at Chase Gymnasium. Live stats and video will be available online.
