Hot offense earns Penguins a 5-inning victory

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's softball grabbed a 10-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur to complete the sweep and finish with 17 runs scored Monday afternoon at Penguin Field.

In game two, junior outfielder McKenzie Schumacher went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base for the Penguins (3-0, 2-0 PacWest). Senior designated Dahlen Dennis added a 2-for-3 day at the plate with one RBI, while junior infielder Mady Christensen was walked and hit by a pitch before capping her day with her first home run of the season.

Freshman outfielder Peyton Mott added a perfect 2-for-2 game at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored, while freshman pitcher Rosa Leguria (1-0) earned her first collegiate win after striking out three and allowing two earned runs in three innings pitched. Sophomore Alyssa Waltman earned in the fourth inning to hold the Argonauts (0-5, 0-2 PacWest) scoreless over the final two innings to earn the save.

NDNU was led by Jaz Arzaga's 2-for-2 performance from the plate in the second game with one RBI. Julia Jones recorded the Argonauts only other RBI in the game going 1-for-3 with a double.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning when the Penguins' made early adjustments to load the bases for senior infielder Karitza Reyes. A passed ball brought Mott home and Reyes followed with a single up the middle to score two more and extend the Penguin's lead to 3-0. With two outs, sophomore outfielder Vanessa Porto took an inside pitch down the right field line to bring Reyes and Alyssa Ramirez across the plate for the 5-0 lead.

NDNU struck back in the top of the fourth as Aurora Adams and Julia Jones got the Argonauts on the board with back-to-back doubles. Ryan Floyd kept the momentum rolling for Notre Dame with a single into right center, but Schumacher made the gapper look routine, cutting the ball off and hitting her cut to keep Jones from scoring. Arzaga singled through the left-hand side to eventually score Jones to bring NDNU within three, but that was as close as it would be the rest of the way.

Mott led off in the bottom of the inning with a double to the fence and Schumacher fed off the momentum, laying down a perfect bunt just in front of the plate for a single, and stole second on the following at-bat to put two runners in scoring position for Christensen. Christensen drove a towering shot over the left-field fence to clear the bases and extend the lead to 8-2 with no outs. With Reyes on second, Dennis doubled over the center fielder's head to make it 9-2. Later in the inning, Chinchilla hit into a fielder's choice to bring in Ramirez from third, and give Dominican the 8-run advantage over NDNU heading into the fifth inning.

In the top half of the inning, the Argos made things interesting with the game on the line, as Jules Keeney reached on a bunt single to Waltman and Adams reached on an error with one out. However, Waltman and the Penguin infield put the comeback to rest, forcing the next two batters to ground out to end the game.

The Penguins will return to the diamond on Monday, March 4, to take on Azusa Pacific University in a doubleheader beginning at noon PST at Penguin Field. Live stats and audio will be available online.
