Sharks swim past Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball was overwhelmed in a 103-78 loss to Hawai'i Pacific University on Monday night at the Conlan Center.

Marisa Mondave led the Penguins with 36 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field. Brittney Cedeno added 12 points with Julia Razo chipping in nine points. Starr Rivera finished with 24 point, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Sharks. Ally Bates added a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds.

Dominican got off to a strong start as Julia Razo and Cedeno each knocked down shots behind the arc to help build a 12-4 lead. Hawai'i Pacific slowly began to assert its will as Rivera knocked down her first 3-pointer to spark the 20-2 run to end the quarter. Rivera ended the run with seven points in the run.

Marisa Mondave hit a 3-pointer from the elbow to get things moving forward for the Penguins again in the second half as they cut the deficit to 27-21 with 7:15 left in the half. Theresa Spatzier and Alysha Marcucci each knocked down shots behind the arc as the Sharks took back the double digit lead. They were able to slowly extend it to as many as 19 points on a pair of free throws by Spatzier, but Razo again hit from distance and Dominican cut its deficit to 15 at the break.

Ally Bates powered the early HPU run in the second half knocking down a 3-pointer before laying it in to cap a 19-3 run that extended the Sharks' lead to 71-41 with 3:24 left in the period. The lead grew to as many as 32 as the Penguins were unable to contain the Sharks.

Dominican will wrap up its pre-holiday schedule Saturday as it hosts Chaminade at 2 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
