CHICO, Calif. — Chico State University dominated Dominican men's basketball in virtually every aspect of the game, running away with a 94-58 win Saturday night at the Art Acker Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (5-2, 1-1 CCAA) found success beyond the 3-point line shooting 68.2% beyond the arc, while hitting 62.7% from the field. The Wildcats collected 38 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end, compared to the Penguins' (0-6) 14. Malik Duffy led all scorers with 30 points in 28 minutes, shooting 11-for-15 from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point range. He also led the team in rebounds with eight, including four offensive rebounds.
Junior guard
Jordan Williams continued to pace Dominican on the offensive end with 14 points, three assists and two rebounds. Senior guard
Sam Averbuck followed closely behind with 12 points as he shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. The Wildcats were able to hold Dominican to 44% shooting from the field, and 35% from the 3-point line.
Chico State held a slight advantage on the Penguins throughout the first 10 minutes until Duffy hit a jumper from the elbow to give the Wildcats a 20-12 lead. On the following possession,
Jaelen Ragsdale found
Lazar Djurovic in the paint for a hook shot in to cut the Penguin deficit to six. Duffy helped the Wildcats retaliate by hitting a three to spark an 18-4 run to extend their lead to 38-18 with 4:30 left to go in the first half.
Christopher Williams II and Averbuck helped the Penguins come within 12 of the Wildcats as they each knocked down shots behind the arc and
Jordan Williams found Averbuck cutting through the lane for a layup with 1:04 left in the half. Duffy helped Chico take back the momentum going into the locker room, knocking down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to head into the half leading 41-26.
The teams traded buckets to open the second half. Duffy continued his hot streak into the second half as Hamilton connected with him for a turn-around jumper. The Penguins quickly responded as
Mateen Hirbod slipped a pass to
Romeo Mays in the paint for a thunderous dunk to cut the Penguins' deficit to 60-37.
The Wildcats didn't skip a beat and went on a 14-4 run, capped off with back-to-back threes from Kevin Warren and Duffy to extend Chico's lead to 33 with 9:13 remaining in regulation.
Dominican will return home to the Conlan Center to take on Point Loma in their first PacWest matchup of the season Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PST. The Penguins will be celebrating Youth Night. Live video and stats will be available online.
