ARCATA, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball lost a second half lead in a 93-66 loss to Cal State East Bay to open up the HSU Thanksgiving Classic on Friday at Lumberjack Arena.
Senior forward
Jerusha Paine led the Penguins (3-2) with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while
Brittney Cedeno and
Marisa Mondave each chipped in 13 points. However, Dominican committed 15 turnovers in the final 15 minutes of play as it lost control of a close contest.
Regina Sankey finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Pioneers (5-2), with Delia Moore chipping in 19 points and three steals. CSUEB scored 31 points off turnovers, 19 of which came the final quarter and a half.
Moore led with back-to-back 3-pointers to cap an 8-0 run during the middle of the first quarter as the Pioneers took a 16-7 lead. Mondave knocked down a shot from the top of the arc to spur the Penguins over the final two minutes of play. Cedeno then finished the period in style for the Penguins with a layup, a steal and another layup in a six-second span to pull the Penguins within two heading to the second.
Sankey helped the Pioneers open up some breathing room early in the second with a 3-pointer to take a six-point lead. Junior
Jordan Charlton answered with one of her own from the left corner and Paine sank a pair of jumpers to give Dominican the 30-29 lead with 5:19 left in the half. The teams traded leads and buckets for the final minutes and the half ended in a 41-41 tie.
The Penguins got off to a strong start in the second half as Mondave, Cedeno and
Julia Razo all attacked the paint for layups to build a 47-41 lead within the first minute and a half. The Pioneers regrouped in a timeout as Sankey and Moore each hit a layup to cut back within two. Dominican held the lead until Zhane Duckett and Kayley Hsiung hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cap a 9-0 run and give CSUEB the 56-51 lead with 4:50 remaining. Dominican retook the lead once and tied the game once in the final minutes of the period, but two Penguin turnovers helped the Pioneers end the third on an 11-2 run to take a 70-61 lead into the final period.
Dominican was unable to regroup in the final period as its deficit quickly reached double digits and they were outscored 23-5.
