Penguins drop thriller in final seconds

CARSON, Calif.—Dominican men's basketball went wire-to-wire with Cal State Dominguez Hills, but Alex Garcia hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to give the Toros the 65-64 win at the Torodome. 

The game went back-and-forth throughout the 40 minutes with 20 lead changes and 10 ties. Garcia finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals for Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-2, 2-0 CCAA). Colten Kresl added 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Toros.
 
Jordan Williams powered the Penguins (0-4) with 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals and one assist. Jaelen Ragsdale finished with 18 points going 3-for-5 from 3-point range, while Romeo Mays finished with 10 points, two steals and two key blocks down the stretch. 

With Dominican trailing by three midway through the first half, Mays nailed a three on the left wing to tie the game at 14, but Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 6-2 run as it attacked the paint to build a 20-16 lead. Williams cut the deficit to two for the Penguins as he drove the lane nailed a floater with 7:49 left in the first half. 

With 4:13 on the clock, Ragsdale drove to the lane to force the defense to collapse and kicked the ball out to Williams on the parameter for a three to give Dominican the 25-24 lead, its first since the first bucket of the game. 

Dominican continued their momentum and with 2:28 left in the half as Ragsdale put his defender on skates and hit a step-back 3-pointer to extend the Penguins' lead to 28-24. Garcia and Nick Kornieck hit back-to-back shots behind the arc for the Toros to take back the lead briefly at 30-28. Williams capped off a 5-0 Dominican run with a jumper and the Penguins headed into the locker room leading 33-32. 

Dominguez Hills turned the tide coming out of the half with a 10-3 run to take the largest lead of the game at 42-36 with 16 minutes remaining. Dominican fought its way back into the game as Chase Anderson cut to the basket and dished it out to Sam Averbuck for a floater to tie the game at 44-44 three minutes later. Williams then grabbed a defensive rebound and threw a long pass to Faustka for a lay-up to lead the Penguins to a 46-44 lead to cap the 10-2 run. 

The Toros took a 62-58 lead with four straight free throws as Dominican fought foul trouble at the under four media timeout. With 57 seconds left and the Penguins down by two points, Mays stole the ball underneath the hoop and Chris Williams II drew a foul and knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 62.

After CSUDH turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions and Jordan Williams drove down the right-side of the lane and hit a clutch pullup jumper to give Dominican a 64-62 lead with 13 seconds left on the clock. The Toros executed a well-drawn up play after a timeout as Kresl found Garcia in the corner for a 3-pointer to give the Toros a 65-64 lead. The Penguins were unable to get off a final heave from halfcourt as CSUDH held on for the victory.

Dominican will make a quick turn-around to take on Purdue Northwest tomorrow at 3 p.m. PST at the Torodome as they look to earn their first win of the year. Live video and stats will be available online.
