SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Senior forward
Luke Raley earned his spot at the top of the Dominican record books while lifting Dominican men's soccer to its eighth straight win, defeating Concordia University 3-2 in overtime Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
After recording his first hat-trick for the Penguins (9-7-1, 7-3 PacWest), Raley is now the single-season record holder for points and goals in Dominican's NCAA DII era. Raley's 18 goals this season also tops the PacWest, passing up forward James Ndubueze (16 goals) from Azusa Pacific.
"To see Luke get his first hat-trick of the year in the way that he did, man, it still gives me chills," head coach
David Frank said. "What a wonderful moment for him, the entire team and our program."
Raley also leads the conference in points (41) and is tied with Ndubueze in game-winning goals this season (5). Raley and Ndubueze will go head-to-head this Saturday as the Penguins and Cougars cap off the 2019 regular season at Kennelly Field.
Roberto Garcia assisted Raley twice on the night to go with two shots on goal.
Luke Ryan and Jose Huerta recorded the two goals for the Eagles (9-7, 7-3 PacWest), but they were unable to hold the Penguins in overtime.
Raley and Garcia got to work quickly in the extra period with a couple of early chances as the Penguins controlled the pace. Garcia flew down the center of the field in the 94th minute and led Raley to the left post, where Raley beat his defender to the spot and sent a shot past Concordia's Mackenzie Hutchins to the bottom left corner for the golden goal.
Concordia drew first blood in the 20th minute as Caley Powers threaded the needle with a pass to Ryan in the box, and Ryan sent it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Dominican was unable to find the equalizer and the Eagles headed to the break with the lead.
Dominican continued to press for the equalizer to open the second half and in the 47th minute Garcia sent a shot toward Concordia's Mackenzie Hutchins, but Hutchins was unable to collect the ball.
Arturo Carrillo Contreras collected the rebound and sent a shot at goal that nailed the crossbar where Raley was standing and he sent a shot to the back of the net with a bicycle kick to tie the game.
Dominican kept the momentum rolling and in the 59th minute Garcia created another opportunity for the Penguins, leading Raley to the box and Raley drilled a shot past the reaching arms of Hutchins to give Dominican their first lead of the afternoon.
In the 78th minute, the Eagles made it an even game once more as Huerta recovered a loose ball the box and matched Raley with a bicycle kick of his own to tie the game at two. Neither team was able to capitalize on chances to end the half and the game headed to extra time.
"Today was an amazing team performance and exactly what we needed from everyone," Frank said. "We had our seniors step up big time as leaders, younger players take care of business in their roles, and everyone contributed positively. I can't say enough about this group, their belief in what we're doing, and the love they bring for each other every day. It's really special and we're just looking forward to our biggest test of the year on Saturday."
Dominican and Azusa Pacific will meet Saturday in a showdown of the two hottest teams in the PacWest at 1:30 p.m. PST at Kennelly Field. The Penguins will be playing for second place in the PacWest, while Azusa Pacific has already clinched the championship and will look to secure its No. 1 ranking in the final national polls.
