Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Penguins wrangle Gators

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Senior forward Jerusha Paine was dominant for Dominican women's basketball in an 88-71 victory Wednesday night over San Francisco State at the Conlan Center.

Paine finished with 34 points and 16 rebounds for her second double-double of the year for the Penguins (2-1). Senior guard Marissa Mondave added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Julia Razo had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Jolene Armendariz led the Gators (0-3) with 28 points on 6-of-11 shooting from behind the arc. Dominican though buckled down on defense to hold SFSU to 34.7% shooting from the field and 29.2% from behind the arc, while knocking down 47.8% from the field and 44.4% from 3-point range on the offensive end.

Armendariz caught fire from downtown early to help push the Gators to a 15-7 lead after her second 3-pointer midway through the period. Freshman guard Brittney Cedeno answered with one of her own from behind the arc to cut the deficit to three, but Armendariz hit her third 3-pointer to take the 18-12 lead with 2:26 left on the clock.

After the teams traded points to end the first, Razo capped a 6-0 run with a make behind the arc to tie the game at 22 with nine minutes left in the half. Razo and Paine each chipped in five points in a 14-2 run to give the Penguins the 38-27 lead with 3:15 left on the first half clock. The offense continued to roll as Cedeno found Razo behind the defense in transition to push the lead to 13. Junior guard Jessica Armstrong ended the half with a beautiful spin around her defender before sinking a reverse layup to make it 46-32 at the break.

Cedeno cut to the basket for a layup to open up the second half before Paine got inside the paint for back-to-back layups to make it 52-32 in the opening minute. SFSU began to slowly cut into the lead as they began a full-court press defensively and attacked the paint on offense. Armandariz highlighted a 17-2 run with a step-back jumper and a 3-pointer to cut the lead back to single-digits at 61-55 with 2:33 left in the third. Cedeno finally stopped the cold spell with a 23-foot 3-pointer, but Armandariz answered on the other end. Cedeno made a beautiful steal and save while going out of bounds and Razo found Mondave for the layup to keep the Gators at bay for a little while longer. Paine extended the lead back to 10 with a pair of free throw makes as the teams headed to the fourth.

Nicole Gleeson found Paine down low to begin the fourth period and she laid it off the glass and Razo found Mondave in the corner for 3 before hitting one of her own to make it 78-60 with eight minutes remaining. Paine started a 7-0 run with a scoop and a score and Mondave followed up with a cut into the paint for two before hitting a 3-pointer to increase the lead back to 22 with under five remaining. It was all the room they would need to close it out.

Dominican will head back out on the road Sunday to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. PST at the Otter Sports Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
