SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball was unable to sustain momentum in a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-16, 25-11) to Hawai'i Pacific Saturday night at the Conlan Center.
Junior libero
Hana Wyles led the Penguins (1-10, 1-5 PacWest) with 24 digs and three assists. Freshman outside hitter
Edee Leslie added seven kills, while
Eleni Loizou finished with four kills and two blocks. The Sharks (10-5, 6-1 PacWest) surged behind Cameryn Collie's 17 kills, 14 digs and two service aces. Hawai'i Pacific had a strong offensive attack throughout with a .238 hitting percentage.
Collie gave the Sharks some early breathing room with a kill and an ace during a 4-0 run to take the 9-4 lead. Dominican answered immediately as junior opposite
Rebecca Smith combined with junior outside hitter Loizou for a block and then found the court on a kill to cut the deficit to one on a 4-point run for the Penguins. Loizou then put down back-to-back kills to start another 4-0 run for Dominican to build a 14-11 lead. The Sharks were able to answer with three quick points to tie the set and the score continued to seesaw. Perla Escobar had two kills, while Casey Davenport and Amanda Acosta each served up aces to help HPU put away Dominican on a set ending 4-1 run.
The Sharks took advantage of several Penguin errors to begin the second set and build a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes. Collie sparked a 4-0 run with a strong kill from the outside to push the lead to six. The teams traded points for most of the remainder of the set as small runs allowed HPU to extend the lead to the final tally of nine.
After trading points to start the third set, Cara McClean used a strong service game to find the court on two aces and Collie added three kills during an 8-0 run that gave all the momentum to the Sharks. HPU continued to cash in at the end of several long rallies to keep the momentum and Collie ended it at 25-11 with back-to-back kills.
Dominican will return to the court Wednesday as they take on Academy of Art at 7 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
