SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Senior guard
Alanna Scott and junior guard Marissa Mondave caught fire from behind the arc to lift Dominican women's basketball to a 77-65 victory Saturday over Chaminade at the Conlan Center.
The Silverwords (3-8, 2-5 PacWest) double and triple teamed senior forward
Natalie Diaz, hoping to make other Penguins (10-2, 7-1 PacWest) beat them, Mondave and Scott were happy to oblige. Mondave finished with 18 points on 6-for-11 from behind the arc, while Scott led all players with 27 points knocking down 7-of-10 3-pointers. Diaz added 14 points and seven rebounds, with junior guard
Vanessa Cruz chipping in 14 points and six assists.
Destiny Castro led Chaminade players with 19 points and six boards. Jordyn Zader and Hunter Liftee each added 13 points. Dominican ended the game shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from 3-point range.
Mondave sparked the Penguins offense early with four 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the game to build a 12-5 lead. Zader and Castro answered with back-to-back buckets to close the gap to three, but Scott knocked down her first 3-pointer from the corner and Mondave followed with her fifth of the game to make it 18-9 with under a minute remaining in the quarter.
The teams traded buckets for most of the second period until Cruz cut backdoor for a floater and then found Scott on the next possession for the 3-pointer. Mondave then followed a steal by Cruz with her sixth make from distance and the Penguins took a 43-28 lead into the break.
Scott picked up where she left off with a 3-pointer to start the second half and extend the lead to 18, but Castro began to attack the basket with back-to-back makes to spark a 6-point Chaminade run to cut the lead to 46-34 with 7:43 left in the third. Cruz got loose for a layup a minute later and Diaz followed with an old-fashioned 3-point play sparking a 7-0 Penguin run to extend the lead to a game-high 19. After Castro capped a 7-point Chaminade run with a pull-up jumper,
Mersadis Allen grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback jumper as time expired to send Dominican to the fourth leading 58-44.
Chaminade closed it back to single digits on a 10-3 run to start the fourth, but Scott answered with a 3-pointer and a layup to push the lead back to double-digits. She ended the 10-point run with another make from distance to give the Penguins a 71-54 lead and the Penguins slowed down the game to hold on for the victory.
Dominican will return to action Thursday against Biola University at 5:30 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
