SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball defensively overpowered Notre Dame De Namur en route to a 62-47 victory Wednesday night at the Conlan Center.
Dominican's (7-13, 3-11 PacWest) offensive resurgence was led by senior forward
Cedric Thomas and senior forward
Ezra Talbert, each recording 11 points. Talbert finished the night, adding seven rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard
Jordan Williams recorded nine points, six rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard
Christopher Williams II finished closely behind with nine points, seven rebounds and one assist.
Val Wilson was the leading scorer for the Argonauts (0-20, 0-14 PacWest), recording 13 points and eight rebounds. RJ Louis added eight points. Dominican locked NDNU down defensively holding it to 27.8 percent shooting from the field and 23.1 percent from behind the arc. The Penguins added one of their better games on the offensive end knocking down 43.3 percent of their shots from the field.
The Penguins jumped to an early 8-2 lead, but the Argonauts quickly evened the score as Anthony Suber stole the ball and drew a foul on the other end to tie the game 8-8 with a free throw. The Penguins answered with an 8-2 run capped when Talbert soared over the rim to grab an offensive rebound and finished the midair put-back for the 16-10 lead at the midway point in the half.
Jordan Williams kept the momentum rolling for the Penguins, finding a seam down the left-hand lane for an uncontested layup, and Chris Williams found Talbert cutting through the lane in transition for a layup make it 20-13 in Dominican's favor with 8:57 remaining in the half.
With 5:54 left to go in the half,
Christian Futch grabbed an offensive rebound, and the Penguins swung the ball around the arc to Chris Williams for a 3-pointer to extend the Penguins lead to 25-17. Dominican continued to extend its lead to 17 after four quick points by Talbert sparked a 9-0 run. The Penguins held the Argonauts to two points over the last 5:38 minutes in the half as
Lazar Djurovic rejected a Stephen Baity jumper at the rim with 50 seconds remaining to send Dominican into the locker room leading 36-19.
Jordan Williams grabbed a long rebound early in the second half and won a one-on-three transition battle with a layup off the glass to keep the Penguins in front, 40-23. After TJ Andersen stole the ball away from Dominican with 13:31 remaining,
Romeo Mays tracked the transition attempt and came from behind to block Andersen's on the backboard and help push the Penguins lead to over 20. Dominican held NDNU to 9-for-31 shooting from the field in the second half and 1-for-8 from 3-point range as it coasted to the victory.
The Penguins will look to start a win streak Friday as they travel across the Golden Gate to take on Academy of Art University at 7:30 p.m. PST at Kezar Pavilion. Live video and stats will be available online.
