Penguins power past Hawks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball rode the momentum from an intense bottom of the sixth of the first game to a doubleheader sweep Sunday of Holy Names at Penguin Field. The Penguins (16-28, 7-17 PacWest) topped the Hawks (3-27, 3-15 PacWest) 10-3 in the first game and 5-1 in the second.

Mady Christensen went 4 for 7 with three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored for Dominican. McKenzie Schumacher added a 3 for 5 performance to go with three stolen bases and a run scored. Alyssa Waltman (5-7) was credited with the win in the first game allowing one run and three hits in 3.2 innings pitched, while Gaby Katafias (9-13) didn't allow an earned run in a complete game for the win in game two.

Haighley Kissee led Holy Names with a 3 for 4 day with two RBI before leaving the game early in the second game.

The Penguins offense woke up in a big way with the game tied in the bottom of the sixth of game one. Dahlen Dennis walked and Christensen singled to begin the inning and both moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Alexis Chinchilla laid down a squeeze bunt between the pitcher and third base and the throw home was late, giving the Penguins the 4-3 lead and putting runners on the corners.

After Chinchilla stole second, a groundout to second scored Christensen from third. Haley Cheek and Schumacher both drew walks to load the bases and Ramirez quickly cleared them with a double to left center for the 8-3 lead. After two more walks loaded the bases again for Dominican, Christensen doubled to center field to score the final two runs of the game. Waltman sealed the victory in fashion catching a hard line drive back to the circle and throwing to Dennis for the game-ending double play.

The Hawks got on the board first after Kiana Evans doubled to left center to bring home a runner from second with two outs. Brianna Morris followed with a single to center field and Evans attempted to add a second run, but Schumacher gunned her down at the plate for the final out. Dennis doubled to right center to lead off the bottom of the second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Alyssa Waltman then grounded out to short to allow Dennis to come home and tie the game 1-1.

Lauren Persi kept the Hawks scoreless for the second consecutive inning in the top of the third and the Penguins carried the momentum into the bottom of the frame. Schumacher jump started the offense with two outs in the frame with a hard hit back to the pitcher for a single. After Schumacher stole second, Alyssa Ramirez checked her swing and the ball died on the third base line for a single and she drew a pickle at second to allow Schumacher the chance to come home for the 2-1 lead.

Karitza Reyes singled down the third-base line and Dennis walked to load the bases and keep the two-out rally going. Christensen singled through the left side to bring home Ramirez and push the lead to 3-1 heading to the fourth.

The Hawks got a run back in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk, but Waltman got out of the jam with back-to-back outs to keep Dominican in the lead. After a scoreless fifth inning, Kayla Hall singled and Kissee doubled to right center for Holy Names to tie the game.

The Hawks put early pressure on Katafias in the second game loading the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and an error, but a pair of force outs at home and a fly out to right ended the threat. Dennis reached on an error and Chinichilla singled on a slow bunt back to the pitcher to put runners on with no outs in the bottom of the second. After a sacrifice moved both runners up, Vanessa Porto singled to bring home Dennis for the first run of the game. Dominican then executed another double steal to perfection and Chinchilla came home to make it 2-0.

Katafias continued her strong performance and did not allow a runner to pass second over the next three innings. Christensen doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and came home on Ramirez's sacrifice fly. Reyes doubled to the right-center gap with two outs and Dennis singled to the same area and advanced to second a late throw home to the plate as Reyes made it 4-0. Chinchilla singled down the right-field line to score Dennis for the five run lead.

The Hawks finally got on the board in the top of the seventh on Jazmine Lewis's single to center, but Schumacher caught another runner at the plate for the second out and Christensen caught a line drive back to second to end the game.

Dominican will play its final home games Saturday against Academy of Art in a doubleheader beginning at noon PDT at Penguin Field. Live stats will be available online.
