Penguins finish season with victory

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 11-seed Dominican women's tennis claimed seventh place with a 5-2 victory Saturday over No. 9-seed Stanislaus State at the PacWest Women's Tennis Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.

The seventh-place finish was the highest PacWest Conference finish ever for the Penguins (11-12), who beat two higher seeds on their way.

Rickimae Torres and Skyler Schaar found themselves in an early 4-3 hole to Kayla Nguyen and Cassidy Ferrell, but won five straight games to take the match 8-4 and give Dominican the first point of the match. The Warriors (7-13) tied the match after Ebone Qualls and Miliaana Proft took No. 3 doubles 8-4.

Taylor Lim and Savannah Gray mounted a late comeback in No. 2 singles winning four straight games to take a 7-4 lead, but Megan Hagerty and Taylor Galya responded to win three straight games and force a tiebreaker. The duos continued to trade points to a 6-6 tie in the tiebreaker until Lim and Gray won the final two points to earn the 8-7 (6) victory.

Galya evened the match in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win on the sixth court for Stanislaus State, but Kaitlyn Nguyen answered for the Penguins with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hagerty to reclaim the team lead. No. 65 Schaar continued her strong play in Arizona with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kayla Nguyen to put Dominican a match away from the team victory.

Alex Wartenberg came through with the clinching point, besting Proft 7-5, 7-5 in No. 3 singles. The rest of the matches were left unfinished after Wartenberg's victory.

The win concluded the Penguins' 2018 season.
