MORAGA, Calif. – Dominican softball split the first doubleheader of its final road trip Saturday, defeating Holy Names 6-5 in extra innings in the first game and falling 5-2 in the second.
Mady Christensen went 3 for 6 with 3 runs, two stolen bases and an RBI to lead the Penguins (17-31, 8-20 PacWest).
McKenzie Schumacher added four stolen bases on the afternoon to move her season total to 42.
Alyssa Waltman earned the victory in the first game pitching 10 innings and allowing one earned run with three strike outs.
Haighley Kissee did it all for the Hawks (4-36, 4-24 PacWest) earning the victory from the circle in the second game and finishing 3 for 8 from the plate with an RBI and two runs.
Game one
Christensen singled to start Dominican's offense in the first game and quickly stole second to get into scoring position.
Karitza Reyes then brought her home with a single up the middle to take the lead. Holy Names responded as Kissee and Tailor Goods singled to lead off the bottom of the frame. Jazmine Lewis brought home Kissee with a double to left center to tie it up.
Schumacher tripled to with an out in the top of the third inning and Christensen walked to put runners on the corners. The Penguins then executed a double steal to bring another run in, while Christensen came home later in the inning on a passed ball to give Dominican the 3-1 lead.
After an error extended the life of Valentina Fontes after she struck out swinging, Mila Salazar walked and Olivia Honeycutt tripled to tie the game back at three in the bottom of the fourth. Kissee added another run with a single through the right side to give the Hawks the 4-3 lead.
Schumacher singled with two outs in the top of the fifth and stole second and third base to move the tying run 60 feet from the plate. Christensen brought her home with the clutch single to left field to tie the game once again.
Waltman kept Holy Names off balance over the next two innings and did not allow a single base runner aboard, but the Penguins were unable to capitalize. The Hawks tried to end it in the bottom of the seventh getting runners on first and second with one out, but Dominican was able to get the lead runner out at third on the next at bat and Kiana Evans flied out to Schumacher in center to send the game to extra innings.
Holy Names had another chance at the victory in the bottom of the eighth after Hall doubled to lead off the frame. Dominican tightened the screws on defense and caught Hall in a pickle on an attempted sacrifice bunt and Waltman recorded the final two outs fielding a ground out on the next batter and striking out Salazar to send the game into the ninth.
The Hawks looked to have the advantage in the top of the 10th after getting the runner placed on second out at third on a fielder's choice, but Christensen began a two-out rally by drawing a walk and moving the go-ahead run over to second base.
Alyssa Ramirez singled to center to bring home
Haley Cheek to give Dominican the lead and advanced to second on the throw home to keep the pressure on the Holy Names. Reyes then came through with a single to right to score one more and give Dominican the two-run cushion. Holy Names was able to get one runner across in the bottom of the frame, but it wouldn't be enough as the Schumacher cleanly fielded a fly ball for the final out of the game.
Game two
The Penguins picked up where they left off in the second game as Ramirez drew a walk to start another two-out rally and Reyes brought her home with a double down the right-field line. After
Alexis Chinchilla walked,
Dahlen Dennis brought home Reyes with a single through the left side to make it 2-0 Dominican.
Kissee reached on a fielding error and came three at bats later on a second Penguin error to close the gap to one. The Hawks then tied the game in the bottom of the second on back-to-back doubles from Mariah Hernandez and Salazar as the clutch hitting slowed for the Penguins.
Holy Names added two more runs in the bottom of the third on a single by Hall to take the 4-2 lead and it was all the cushion they would need as Dominican left seven runners stranded over the final four innings of the game.
Dominican will head to Southern California next week for its final two doubleheaders, beginning Friday at Concordia University Irvine at 2 p.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
