SURPRISE, Ariz. – Dominican women's tennis fell 5-0 in Thursday's quarterfinals of the 2018 PacWest Women's Tennis Championships to No. 13 Azusa Pacific at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
"It was a tough loss, but I am proud of our effort," Dominican head coach
Cristina Visico said. "The girls played a lot better than the scores show. We look forward to the matches we have coming up in these final two days."
Diana Baumgartnere and Kara Hinton got the No. 3-seeded Cougars (18-7) off to a strong start with an 8-1 victory, while No. 33 Toby Miclat and Petra Ivankovic added an 8-3 victory on the top doubles court for APU. Domincan's
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Alex Wartenberg held a lead at the midway point of the final doubles point as they tried to claim a point, but Mikayla Rinker and Courtney Page were able to hold them off for the 8-5 victory.
Page claimed the first singles victory 6-1, 6-0 over
Savannah Gray and No. 54 April Wong topped
Taylor Lim 6-2, 6-2 to seal the victory. The remainder of the singles matches were left unfinished.
The Penguins will play Friday at 9 a.m. MST against No. 7-seed Concordia Irvine for a chance to play in the fifth-place match. Live stats will be available online.
