Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican softball fell 7-1 and 9-0 to Biola University in the final games of its Southern California road trip Thursday at Freedom Field.
McKenzie Schumacher led the Penguins (6-16, 2-8 PacWest) from the plate going 3 for 7 from the plate to go with a stolen base.
Mady Christensen collected the only RBI for Dominican and
Alyssa Waltman finished 2 for 2 for the Penguins in the second game.
Areana Ramos led the Eagles (21-5, 8-2 PacWest) with two home runs and eight RBI on 4 for 6 hitting.
Dominican threatened early in the first game when Schumacher singled through the left side and stole second with one out in the top of the first. After
Karitza Reyes walked, Terri Van Dagens escaped the inning with a groundout and a fly out to end the frame.
The Eagles then struck first in the bottom of the second. Kayla Neff singled up the middle and to bring home one run and Andi Hormel added a second run with a double through the left side. A pair of walks and a wild pitch in the top of the fifth put
Dahlen Dennis and
Vanessa Porto in scoring position with a chance to tie the game on a base hit, but Van Dagens induced a fly out to left to escape the inning.
A pair of singles and an error helped load the bases for Biola in the bottom of the frame and another error brought one run home to increase the lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Ramos stepped to the plate with two outs and sent the ball over the left-field fence to make it 7-0 in favor of the Eagles.
Emily Ginn singled down the left-field line to lead off the top of the seventh for the Penguins and Porto and
Haley Cheek each drew walks to load the bases with no outs.
Mady Christensen singled to short to score Ginn, but Biola turned a double play to end the game and secure the win.
Schumacher and Christensen singled in the top of the first in the second and both advanced into scoring position with two outs, but
Tayler Munoz lined out to center field to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Ruth Munoz singled and Hailey Boyett doubled to right center in the bottom of the first inning for the 1-0 lead in the second game.
Waltman singled through the left side and Cheek walked to move her into scoring position, but Biola escaped once again to preserve their lead. After a sacrifice fly scored one in the bottom of the third to extend the Eagles' lead, Ramos homered to right to bring in two more runs for the 4-0 lead.
Ramos then capped a five-run fourth inning with a 2-RBI double down the left field line and Biola held the Penguins in the fifth to secure the victory.
Dominican returns home Sunday to face Simpson in a doubleheader beginning at noon PST at Penguin Field. Live stats will be available online.
