Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Dominican softball found its offense Tuesday, but was unable to overcome an early deficit in an 11-6 loss to CBU in the first game before dropping the second 12-0 at John C. Funk Stadium.
Keely Bowlan led the offensive charge for the Penguins (6-14, 2-6 PacWest), finishing 2 for 3 with three RBI and two walks on the day. Soraya Shahbazian led the Lancers (13-3, 6-0 PacWest) with a 2 for 6 day at the plate with five RBI and a home run.
The Lancers got off to a hot start in the first game stringing together nine hits in the bottom of the first. Ali Subia brought home two with a homer to right center, while Anise Avalos and Shahbazian each slugged 3-run home runs to give CBU the 10-0 lead.
The Penguins regrouped as
Alexis Chinchilla was hit by a pitch to put a runner on with two outs in the top of the second.
Mady Christensen followed with a single to right and
Haley Cheek walked to load the bases. Bowlan then drove in the first two runs of the series for Dominican with a single to center.
Halle Rosario followed a pair of singles Subia and Manoa Wijgertse with a sacrifice fly to add a run for the Lancers in the bottom of the inning. It would be the final run of the game for CBU as Aly Waltman and the Penguin defense allowed only two more hits in the final three innings.
McKenzie Schumacher walked and
Alyssa Ramirez singled to put her in scoring position. An error by the Lancers allowed Schumacher to come home from second and cut the lead to eight.
After Waltman stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the third, Christensen led off the top of the fourth with a single to left. Cheek walked and Bowlan brought home her third run of the game with a single to right center. Schumacher singled up the middle to bring home Cheek and
Dahlen Dennis doubled through the left side to score Bowlan and cut the lead to five.
The Penguins put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to get any closer.
CBU found success in the opening inning of the second game as well as Hannah Thieroff launched a 2-run home run to left center to open a 2-0 lead. Weijgertse led off the second with a triple and a single Rosario brought her home. The Lancers added two more runs in the inning on a wild pitch and a Shahbazian sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Vanessa Porto looked to start something for Dominican in the top of the third as she led off the inning with a single and Bowlan walked to move her into scoring position with no outs. Kellye Springstead was able to work her way out of the jam and keep the Penguins off the board after retiring the next three batters.
Rosario homered to left field in the bottom of the third to add three more runs and Shaye Felix doubled home another to extend the lead to 9-0. Amanda Springstead added a 3-run home run of her own in the fourth for the final runs of the game.
Dominican will have a day off before taking on Biola University Thursday at Freedom Field in La Mirada, California. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST with live stats and video available online.
