Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Dominican softball fell in a tight 5-0 contest in the first game against Cal Baptist before falling 8-0 in the nightcap Monday at the John C. Funk Softball Stadium.
 
Gaby Katafias allowed one run and two hits through the first four innings of the first game for the Penguins (6-12, 2-4 PacWest), but the Lancers (11-3, 4-0 PacWest) adjusted to score four runs in the fifth.
 
Ciara Stapp and Kellye Springstead both held the Dominican offense in check, allowing seven Dominican baserunners to each earn victories for CBU.
 
Caitlyn Lloyd led off the first game for the Lancers with a solo home run to right center. It was the only blemish for Katafias in the frame as she retired the next three batters to end the inning.
 
McKenzie Schumacher and 
Dahlen Dennis attempted to get Dominican's offense going in the second inning by reaching on consecutive fielder's choices, but CBU turned a double play to end the frame. 
Karitza Reyes drew a walk in the fourth, but the Penguins were unable to advance her any further.
 
Katafias allowed two singles from Ali Subia and Lloyd and Amanda Springstead walked to load the bases with one out for the Lancers in the bottom of the fifth. Cheyann Tucker and drive home four for the 5-0 Lancer lead.
 
Lloyd continued her strong play at the plate for CBU in the second game as she opened the second game with a double to right field. Shahbazian and Haley Thieroff hit doubles as well to bring in two runs in the frame.
 
The Penguins threatened to cut into the lead in the top of the second after 
Alyssa Waltman drew a walk to open the frame. Dennis reached on a fielding error by K. Springstead and Waltman stole third to move into prime scoring position. 
Mady Christensen laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, but Subia flipped the ball perfectly to the catcher on the run to get Waltman at the plate.
 
With two runners on in the bottom of the third, Manoa Weijgertse singled up the middle to extend the lead 4-0. Subia doubled home two more runs in the fourth and a fielding error allowed another two to come home for the 8-0 lead. Dominican was unable to get the run needed to extend the game in the top of the fifth as the Lancers secured the victory.
 
The Penguins will return to the diamond Tuesday for a rematch with Cal Baptist in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. PST at John C. Funk Softball Stadium. Live stats and video will be available online.
