SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Junior
Emily Ginn capped an offensive explosion with a walk-off grand slam to give Dominican softball a 10-1 victory in a doubleheader split Sunday with Chaminade at Penguin Field. The Silverswords (5-16, 2-12 PacWest) won the first game 4-3.
Sophomore
McKenzie Schumacher led the Penguins (8-18, 3-9 PacWest) from the plate, going 3 for 6 with two RBI, two runs, a triple and a stolen base. Senior
Gaby Katafias moved to 5-7 on the year allowing one run and striking out two in the second game.
Madelyn Stockslager finished 2 for 4 with two RBI for Chaminade as well as earning a save in the first game of the day.
After holding the Silverswords scoreless in the first frame of the second game, freshman
Vanessa Porto was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to give Dominican the momentum. Schumacher followed with a single to left to bring her home for the 1-0 lead.
Schumacher then stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt to put another run 60 feet from home with one out. Sophomore
Mady Christensen placed a squeeze bunt in front of the plate and Schumacher beat the throw home to make it 2-0 for the Penguins.
Kayla Higuchi and Jackie Najera singled for Chaminade in the top of the third to put runners on the corners with two outs. Stockslager sent a hard hit back to Katafias in the circle that went under her glove to score Higuchi and cut the lead in half.
Dominican answered quickly after Porto walked and advanced to second on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame and freshman
Alyssa Ramirez doubled to right to bring her home for the 3-1 lead. Katafias followed by retiring the side in the top of the fourth including a strike out.
Junior
Karitza Reyes doubled into the right-center gap to lead off the bottom of the fourth and advanced to third on freshman
Alyssa Waltman's sacrifice bunt.
Alexis Chinchilla walked to put runners on the corners and the Penguins executed a double steal to bring in its fourth run of the game.
Once again Katafias finished a perfect frame with a strike out in the top of the fifth to set up the final frame of the game. Porto singled to lead off the frame and Schumacher tripled to bring her home for the 5-1 lead. Ramirez singled up the middle to bring in Schumacher in the next at bat. After Reyes reached on a fielding error, Waltman singled through the left side to load the bases. Ginn came in to pinch hit and sent the third pitch she saw over the center field fence for the game-ending grand slam.
Errors plagued the Penguins in the first game of the day as two in the first inning allowed a run to score for Chaminade. Kiana Ulufale brought home another unearned run with a 2-out single on a hard hit into the hole in the left side of the infield.
Makena Kealoha singled up the middle to lead off the second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Najera doubled down the left-field line to bring her in for the 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless third and fourth inning, sophomore
Lauren Persi jumpstarted the Dominican offense with a double to left center and Waltman followed with a double to the same spot to cut the Silversword lead to 3-1. Porto followed with a single into the 5-6 hole and the shortstop's throw to first was off line allowing Waltman to come home to trim the deficit to one.
An error in the top of the sixth helped Chaminade add another run on Stockslager's single to right field to regain a two-run lead. Junior
Keely Bowlan made a diving catch in the top of the seventh to help the Penguins keep the game close and Dominican loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Waltman scored on a fielding error, but Stockslager ended the threat with a strike out to preserve the Silverswords victory.
