Penguins fall in final innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. – Dominican softball dropped two heartbreakers 1-0 and 10-9 Saturday against Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Softball Field.

Alyssa Waltman was fantastic in the circle for the Penguins (0-4) despite being credited with losses in each game. Waltman allowed only one earned run in 10.2 innings pitched between the two games and finished 3 for 5 from the plate with an RBI.

Abby Greer earned the victory for the Pioneers (2-0) in the first game with seven scoreless frames and came in for the save in the second to record the final two outs.

The first game was a pitcher's duel from the beginning. After the Pioneers put runners on first and second in the bottom of the first inning Waltman caught Emilie Portesi swinging to end the inning.

Waltman walked in the top of the second but got caught in a pickle between second and third after a Mady Christensen double. Waltman then sat down three Pioneers in order in the bottom of the frame.

Alyssa Ramirez singled in the top of the third to put another runner in scoring position with two outs, but Abby Greer got out of the jam for CSUEB.

The Pioneers threatened again in the fourth, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Waltman forced Bailee Glover into an inning-ending double play to escape unscathed.

Waltman led off the seventh with a single, but CSUEB turned the double play to clear the bases. Alexis Chinchilla then doubled to put the go-ahead in scoring position, but Dominican again was not able to get the clutch hit to bring her home. The Pioneers finally broke through in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases and Bailee Aguigui brought home Kassie Kochan with a sacrifice fly.

Karitza Reyes reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to start the second game. Dahlen Dennis then walked and a double steal allowed Reyes to come in for the first run of the game.

The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the frame as Courtney Leyba brought home two on a triple to spark a six-run inning. Leyba scored in the bottom of the second on a Sarah Fukushima double to extend the lead to 7-1 as the Pioneers looked to be in control of the game.

The Dominican bats exploded in the third when Dennis followed up back-to-back singles with a 2-RBI double to left center to start the inning. Dennis scored on a wild pitch and the Penguins loaded the bases to keep the pressure on.

After Chinchilla and Vanessa Porto each brought home runners, Reyes reached on an error to tie the game at 7 and Dennis followed with an infield single to give Dominican the lead. Waltman singled through the right side to bring in one more to make it 9-7.

The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a Penguin error to bring in two unearned runs and tying the game 9-9. After two scoreless frames, CSUEB used another Dominican error to bring in Leyba for the 10-9 lead heading to the final frame.

Porto walked and McKenzie Schumacher singled to center to put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh. Greer came in to pitch for the Pioneers and recorded the final two outs for the save.

The Penguins will hit the road next week for the Dixie State Easton Classic to take on Chadron State and Fort Lewis in a doubleheader Friday beginning at 10 a.m. MST in St. George, Utah.
