Penguins split with Argonauts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Rafael, Calif. – Dominican softball split a doubleheader Sunday with Notre Dame de Namur, winning the first game 12-1 before dropping an 8-3 decision in the second.

Gaby Katafias (4-3) earned the victory in the first game and ended the day with nine innings pitched, allowing three earned runs and striking out six. Keely Bowlan powered the Penguins' (6-10, 2-2 PacWest) offense in the first game, going 2 for 2 with three RBI, a double and a walk. McKenzie Schumacher burned up the base paths with four stolen bases for Dominican.

Aurora Adams slugged the Argonauts (3-12, 2-2 PacWest) to victory in the second game with two home runs and four RBI, while Sofia Garcia (2-2) allowed one earned run in a complete game victory.

Katafias got the Penguins off to a strong start in the first game retiring the side and setting up a big bottom of the frame. Schumacher walked and stole second before freezing the Argonaut shortstop to allow Karitza Reyes to reach base safely on a fielder's choice. Dahlen Dennis singled with two outs to load the bases and Chinchilla walked to score the first run. Mady Christensen singled down the left field line to score two more and Bowlan doubled home two more. Schumacher capped the scoring with a single up the middle to make it 6-0 heading into the second.

Alessandra Giannavola tripled to lead off the second for the Argonauts, but Katafias stood strong and struck out the final two batters to strand her there. Another two out rally aided by a pair of NDNU errors allowed the Penguins to add four more runs in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the fourth, Giannavola doubled and Taylor Haynes singled and stole a base to put runners on second and third with one out. Katafias struck out the next batter, but Stella Weinkauf singled after the ball hit the very end of her bat and rolled slowly back to Katafias to score one. Reyes turned a routine groundout to end the frame with the Penguins leading 10-1.

Vanessa Porto reached on an error and Bowlan walked to put a runner in scoring position for Dominican in the bottom of the fourth. Reyes then doubled to deep center field to bring home both for the 12-1 lead. Katafias quickly retired the side on four pitches in the top of the fifth for the win.

The Argonauts struck first in the second game after Giannavola tripled home the first run and Haley Stahl and Aurora Adams came home on sacrifice flies for the 3-0 lead. Schumacher reached on an error and stole second and third to lead off the bottom of the frame. Alyssa Ramirez dropped a squeeze bunt down the third base line and Schumacher slid underneath the tag to trim the lead to 3-1.

NDNU continued to find the gaps in the second inning as Adams hit the first of her two home runs to make it 6-1 and forced the Penguins to make a change in the circle.

Ramirez tripled to left field with one out in the bottom of the third and scored on Alyssa Waltman's sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to four runs, but the Penguins were unable to get any closer for the remainder of the game.

After the Argonauts added two more runs on Adam's home run in the fourth, Dominican tried one last rally in the bottom of the seventh. Emily Ginn doubled to lead off and Porto singled and stole second to put two runs in scoring position with no outs. Schumacher grounded out to score one, but NDNU's defense came through to record the final two outs for the 8-3 win.

Dominican will have the week off before heading to Southern California to face Cal Baptist Monday, March 5, in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. PST. Live stats will be available online.
