Penguins lose pitcher's duel

Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican softball fell 2-0 Wednesday to Sonoma State in a pitcher's duel at Seawolf Field.

Gaby Katafias (0-2) allowed only one earned run on two hits in six innings pitched, but it was not enough for the Penguins (2-8). Alexis Chinchilla went 2 for 3 from the plate to lead Dominican offense. Gabby Dupree collected the win for the Seawolves (6-4) scrambling three hits over five innings pitched, while Brigid Ruiz came in for the save over for the final two innings.

Karitza Reyes was hit by a pitch and Mady Christensen walked to help Dominican put the pressure on Dupree in the top of the first inning with one out. Dupree and her defense paired up to keep the Penguins off the board and send it to the bottom of the frame.

Katafias set the tone with the first batter of the game as she struck out Alee Balanon swinging on her way to retiring the first six batters she faced.

Cameron Kirtlan was the first Seawolf to reach base safely on a throwing error in the bottom of the third. She was then awarded second base after an out call was reversed and umpires ruled she was obstructed on a steal attempt. Jenn Amaral laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kirtlan to third and Balanon singled up the middle to give Sonoma State the 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Calcanyblair doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth for the Seawolves and advanced to third on a ground out. Sarah Langley then grounded out to short stop and the relay throw to home was late as Calcanyblair was able to slide around the tag for the 2-0 lead.

Chinchilla and Schumacher each singled in the top of the fifth to put runners on first and second with two outs, but Dupree was able to get out of the inning unscathed. Ruiz replaced Dupree in the top of the sixth and the Penguins looked to cut into the lead. Christensen reached on an error and was advanced to second on a groundout to put a runner in scoring position, but Ruiz struck out the next batter and a groundout to third ended the inning.

Dominican will return home Saturday to host Antelope Valley in a doubleheader beginning at noon PST at Penguin Field. Live stats will be available online.
