Penguins fall to Orediggers

Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dominican softball fell 8-0 Sunday to Colorado School of Mines at Karl Brooks Field in its final game of the 2018 Dixie State Easton Classic.

McKenzie Schumacher finished 1 for 2 with a walk, while teammate Dahlen Dennis was also 1 for 2 with a double to lead the Penguins (2-7) from the plate. Pua Fujunaga powered the Orediggers (4-5) going 2 for 3 from the plate with two RBI.

Lauren Persi began the game strong from inside the circle for Dominican allowing only two hits in the first two innings in a pitcher's duel with Claire Stringfellow. Errors though opened the door for the Orediggers in the third inning.

The first error allowed the Megan Dickson to reach base safely and load the bases. A walk on the next batter brought the first run across followed by a second error that crossed the second run of the game. Mines added two more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.

They added three more runs in the third to make it 7-0 and set up the opportunity to end the game in the fifth. Sonoma Toot singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Clara Larson put her on third with one out and a Katie Leiker singled up the middle to bring her home and end the game.

Dominican will return to Northern California to take on Sonoma State at 2 p.m. PST Wednesday at Seawolf Softball Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
