BELMONT, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball returned to its winning ways Wednesday night as it coasted past Notre Dame de Namur for a 70-42 PacWest victory at Walter Gleason Gymnasium.
The Penguins (5-3, 1-2 PacWest) held the lead the entire game, shooting 57.4 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from behind the arc. Coach Booker Harris never once called a timeout from the floor, encouraging the Penguins to sustain momentum over NDNU.
Chris Williams II,
Cedric Thomas and
Ezra Talbert all scored in double digits for the Penguins as Williams II and Thomas each finished with 16 points. Williams II shot 7-for-9 form the field, including 2 for 4 from 3-point range. Talbert added 12 points, six rebounds and two assists.
Dominican held the Argonauts (0-9, 0-3 PacWest) to 30.2 percent from the field, and 26.3 percent on 3-pointers. No player reached double digits, as Chazz Wade recorded a team-high eight points to go with three rebounds.
The Penguins held the pace of play throughout the first half as Williams II led the Penguins to an 8-point lead six minutes into the game, nailing a 3-pointer on an assist by
Ryan Hiepler. Talbert continued Dominican's run with a defensive rebound, and sprinted down court for a jumper to give Dominican the lead, 18-8 with 13:05 remaining in the half.
The Penguins increased their lead to 12 as Williams II found Thomas for the up and under lay-up, followed by another attack from
Christian Futch in the paint with 7:36 until the break. The Argonauts would cut the deficit to just three, going on a 7-0 run, capped off with a jumper from Wade with a minute left until the break. The Penguins recouped before going into the locker room when Talbert knocked down a shot from downtown and
Jared Harper stole the ball away before
Sam Averbuck nailed a jumper for the 38-30 lead at the break.
The Penguins began the second half with a 9-0 run as Thomas caught fire, scoring six during the run. Dominican continued to pour it on, extending its lead to 23 as Thomas made it to the foul line to knock down both attempts before hitting a layup on the other end.
Romeo Mays and
Lazar Djurovic came off the bench to each hit a 3-pointer in the final moments and Djurovic's became the largest lead of the night with the final score of 70-42.
The Penguins will look to start another winning streak as they travel to Oakland on Sunday to face Holy Names University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. PST. Live video and stats will be available online.
