SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball trailed for only two minutes in a commanding 94-46 victory Monday over the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at the Conlan Center.
Natalie Diaz scored 30 points to go with seven rebounds. It was the seventh time this season Diaz has topped 30 points for the Penguins (8-2, 5-1 PacWest).
Julia Razo added 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while
Vanessa Cruz knocked down four 3-pointers on her way to 16 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists.
Alyssa Movchan led the Vulcans (4-5, 1-4 PacWest) with 14 points and five rebounds. Allie Navarette grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and chipped in nine points for UHH.
Dominican was relentless on defense finishing with 11 steals and three blocks while holding the Vulcans to 27.3 percent shooting from the field. The Penguins were just as efficient on the other side of the court connecting on 53.7 percent of their shots and 40 percent from 3-point range, while finishing with a 51-32 edge in rebounds.
Navarette opened the scoring in the game with a 3-pointer to give the Vulcans their only lead of the game, but Razo quickly sparked the Penguins on a 12-0 run with a layup and 3-pointer to give them the lead for good. After a UHH bucket, Diaz went on a personal 11-0 run highlighted by her second 3-point make of the season to extend the lead to 20-5 with 3:18 left in the quarter. Razo bracketed another make by Diaz with two 3-pointers as the lead grew to 24, but the Vulcans scored the final six points of the period to trail 29-11 heading to the second.
Cruz opened the second period with a driving layup and a midrange jumper to jump-start a 7-0 run and push the lead to 36-11 at the midway point. The teams traded baskets for the final five minutes and Dominican held a 43-20 lead at the half.
Cruz sparked the first run of the second half as she stole the ball away and found senior guard
Alanna Scott on the other end for a fastbreak layup and Diaz followed with six consecutive points to make it 53-23 with 6:26 left in the third. Cruz then hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the half and Razo added one of her own to extend the lead to 37 heading to the fourth.
Dominican continued to pile on as the lead grew to as many as 53 on a pair of layups by
Savannah McMorrow and the Penguins rolled to victory.
