SAN DIEGO – Dominican women's volleyball was unable to close out sets as Point Loma took the match 25-17, 31-29, 25-22 Saturday at Golden Gymnasium.
Senior
Kate Even led Dominican (8-19, 6-16 PacWest) with 12 kills on a .385 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Catherine Johnson contributed 10 kills on .300 hitting percentage and five digs. Senior
Cat Thomason added seven kills, while freshman
Brittania Chan finished with nine kills and 12 digs.
Kayla Chapman led the Sea Lions (18-11, 15-7 PacWest) with 13 kills on a .571 hitting percentage to go with three blocks. Rachael Schlect added a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Courtney Dyer had a big day on defense for PLNU with 26 digs.
The Sea Lions jumped ahead 7-2 to start the first set as Schlect and Chapman powered the run with two kills apiece. However, the Penguins began to slowly chip away and Chan put down a kill to make it 10-8 in favor of PLNU. The Sea Lions weathered the run and answered with four unanswered to build a 17-10 lead and Dominican was unable to answer as they went on to take the first set 25-17.
The teams traded points to begin the second set, neither able to put together a run greater then two and Point Loma taking the narrow 14-11 lead. The Penguins took advantage of several Sea Lion errors to mount a 5-0 run and take the 16-14 lead. Dyer provided the answer from the service line for PLNU with a pair of aces to cap a 3-0 run and tie the set at 18. Thomason sparked Dominican on a late 3-0 run with a kill and a block assist before a Sea Lion rotation error set the Penguins up with set point at 24-22. Jamie Cymbaluk had back-to-back kills to fend delay the end of the set and the teams remained deadlocked long after the 25th point. Chapman and Cymbaluk each had a kill and combined for a block to give PLNU the 3-0 surge it needed to finally conclude the set at 31-29.
The third set went very much the same with the teams exchanging leads. With the score tied at 10-10, the Sea Lions pulled away with a 5-0 run highlighted by back-to-back kills from Madie Fox. It looked like PLNU would run away with the victory after it took a 15-21, but Johnson had three kills during a 6-0 run to tie the set. It would not be enough as errors helped the Sea Lions end the match with a 4-1 run.
This concludes the Penguins 2018 season.
