SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball held off Sonoma State for the 64-58 victory Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Center.

Diaz filled up the box score for the Penguins (1-1) with 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Senior guard
Alanna Scott shot herself out of a slump to finish with 14 points. Senior guard
Anjelica Collins added nine points on a perfect night behind the arc to go with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Ugochi Anudokem led the Seawolves (1-1) with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds. Dominican had another great defensive night holding Sonoma State to 36.4 percent from the field, the second consecutive game it held a team under 40 percent shooting. The Penguins also held a 24-7 advantage in points off the Seawolves' 22 turnovers.
Collins and Scott sparked Dominican from the start with back-to-back 3-pointers for the 6-0 lead. From there the game turned into a defensive struggle with jumpers by sophomores

Julia Razo granting the Penguins an 11-8 edge heading to the second period.
Sophie Northern scored four quick points for Sonoma State in the second period during a 6-0 run to give it the 14-11 advantage with eight minutes left in the half. Larocca stole the ball and laid it in on the other end to cut the lead back to one and Scott followed up a Razo steal with her second triple of the game to retake the 16-14 edge a minute later. Diaz added six points and the Penguins continued to pull away in a 15-0 run to extend the lead to 12 heading into the final two minutes of the half. Dominican headed into the half with the 28-18 lead after trading baskets with the Seawolves for the final minutes.
After Diaz finished over Anudokem to give the Penguins a 14-point lead, Kylie Kiech hit back-to-back shots behind the arc to cap an 11-0 run for Sonoma. Collins came through with a timely 3-pointer from the corner off an assist from Diaz to answer and Dominican led 35-29 at the under-five-minute media timeout. The game remained close with the Penguins taking a 40-36 lead into the final period of play.
Diaz laid the ball in for the first basket of the fourth before finding Collins for a 3-pointer as Dominican scored seven unanswered to extend its lead to 47-36 with 7:22 left in the game. The Seawolves battled back and Kiech cut it to 53-50 with a make from deep with two minutes remaining. Scott provided the answer hitting 3-pointers from both corners on back-to-back possessions to take a 59-50 lead with 1:29 remaining. After a pair of free throws from Sonoma, Razo nailed a shot behind the arc with 49 seconds remaining to end the Seawolves comeback hopes.
Dominican will head across the bay to take on Stanislaus State on Friday at 5 p.m. PDT at Walter Gleason Gymnasium on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur. Live stats and video will be available online.
