Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dominican women's volleyball fell in three sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-19) Saturday afternoon to Dixie State at the Student Activities Center.
Senior
Aimee Steinwand led the Penguins (3-8, 2-2 PacWest) in kills with nine, while freshman
Josie Walser finished with a double-double of 16 assists and 15 digs. Lauren Gammell and Kayla Chapman led the Trailblazers (5-8, 2-3 PacWest) with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Dixie State's strong block caused issues for Dominican limiting them to a .123 hitting percentage, while the Trailblazers hit at a .297 clip.
The first set began as a seesaw battle between the teams, but Dixie State opened a lead with three-consecutive points for a 9-6 lead. The Penguins tried to keep things close, but a late 7-0 run closed the door to give the set to the Trailblazers.
The second set was much like the first with Dominican holding an 11-10 edge behind a strong attack from Steinwand and a strong service game. However, Dixie State changed the momentum with a 6-1 run to take the 16-12 lead. The Penguins made a late 3-0 charge forcing Dixie timeout trailing 24-22, but Chapman found the floor to close the 25-22 set win for the Trailblazers.
Dominican took advantage of several Dixie State attack errors and
Kate Even gave the Penguins a 6-5 lead with a kill in the early stages of the set. It was all Trailblazers from that point on as a 7-0 run gave them full control and they maintained the lead the rest of the way.
Dominican will host its first match of the year Wednesday against Notre Dame de Namur at 7 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
