Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell Saturday afternoon to Sonoma State 25-16, 25-16, 25-20 in the final match of the Route 92 Showcase.
Aimee Steinwand led the Penguins (0-4) with nine kills and eight digs.
Cat Thomason added 6 kills and two blocks for Dominican, while
Josie Walser had 14 assists and
Hana Wyles had 13 digs.
Kelsey McIntire led the Seawolves (3-1) with nine kills and Courtney Seda added 26 assists for Sonoma State.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead, but back-to-back kills by
Susanna Pilkerton and Amy Steinwand evened the match at 3-3. From there Sonoma State reeled off six-consecutive points to grab a 9-3 lead. The teams continued to trade points until a late run from the Seawolves gave them the 25-16 set victory.
Sonoma jumped out to an early lead again in the second set,
Eleni Loizou found the floor on two kills and Steinwand had an ace to close the gap to 12-11. The Seawolves grabbed the momentum again late on a 7-1 run to take the set 25-16.
The Penguins bounced back with a strong start in the third set to take a 3-0 lead, including an ace by
Josie Walser. Steinwand ended a 5-1 run with a kill to increase the lead to 9-5 in favor of Dominican. The Seawolves cut the deficit to one, but a kill by Loizou and a Sonoma error made it 15-12 Penguins. Morgan Annala recorded three aces to power a 5-0 run that swung the momentum back in the Sonoma's favor as it went on to a 25-20 victory.
Dominican will be back in action Thursday against Simon Fraser at 3 p.m. MST in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase hosted in Nampa, Idaho.
