IRVINE, Calif. – The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a pair of games on Monday at Concordia Irvine.
The Penguins were dealt a 1-0 extra-inning loss in the first contest and then fell in an 8-4 result in the second half of the doubleheader.
With the results, Dominican falls to 18-26 overall and 15-13 in the PacWest Conference. The Penguins will now prepare for Saturday's Senior Day doubleheader against Academy of Art. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Penguin Field.
Game One: Eagles 1, Penguins 0
The first contest stretched 10 innings and featured a pair of gutsy pitching performances from Dominican's
Katelyn Harden and Concordia's Grayson Harvey.
Harden finished with nine innings pitched, allowing five hits and zero earned runs while striking out 10. The Eagles' winning run came unearned.
The Penguins managed three hits against Harvey as that set included hits from
Alyssa Lanza,
Karitza Reyes and
Catlyn Cavender. Concordia's starter collected 14 strikeouts.
Game Two: Eagles 8, Penguins 4
After Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, Dominican bounced back with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Harden started the rally with an infield single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Alexis Chinchilla.
Haley Cheek followed with a groundout, moving Harden to third. The Penguins then knocked a pair of clutch hits, including a
Mady Christensen single and a
Keely Bowlan double. That put the Penguins ahead 2-1.
The Eagles tallied seven runs through the middle innings though, taking an 8-2 lead into the final frame. Reyes knocked a two-run single for Dominican in the seventh but it proved to be too little and too late.
