SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – For the second-consecutive day on Sunday, the Dominican University of California softball team earned a doubleheader sweep.
The Penguins topped Holy Names at home, outscoring the Hawks 3-0 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game. Now with a four-game winning streak, Dominican is 10-14 overall and 9-5 in the PacWest.
Senior pitcher
Katelyn Harden tossed another complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits in Sunday's first contest and improving her season record to 8-2.
In the second game, the Penguins collected eight hits with three coming from leading hitter
McKenzie Schumacher.
Dominican will resume its homestand on Thursday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Hawaii Hilo.
Game One: Penguins 3, Hawks 0
While Harden held the Hawks' offense scoreless through all seven innings, Dominican got on the board in the fourth with a pair of manufactured runs.
Catlyn Cavender produced a sacrifice fly, which allowed
Alyssa Lanza to come home. Later in the inning,
Alexis Chinchilla stole home to push the Penguins' lead to 2-0.
The home squad added an insurance run in the sixth inning, when Chinchilla contributed a sacrifice fly off a 3-2 pitch that brought in Cavender to score.
Harden finished her outing in dominating fashion, striking out three of HNU's final four hitters.
Game Two: Penguins 4, Hawks 3
The Dominican offense carried its momentum into the second game and scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Schumacher started the rally with a leadoff basehit and one out later,
Dahlen Dennis lined an RBI single up the middle.
With two outs in the inning, smart baserunning led to Penguins' runs from Dennis and Cavender. To reach base, Cavender delivered an RBI double to the gap off a 3-2 pitch.
Dominican starter
Gaby Katafias held the Hawks scoreless through the first three innings but the visitors managed to tally three runs in the top of the fourth. That made it a narrow one-run margin through the rest of the game but Penguins' relievers
Lauren Persi and Harden combined for 3.1 scoreless innings.
Persi, a Corona native, earned her first collegiate win while Harden picked up the save. Through Harden's 15.1 innings pitched this weekend, she limited opponents to six hits and zero runs. She also struck out 24 batters during that span.
