FRESNO, Calif. – In a Saturday afternoon road battle at Fresno Pacific, the Dominican University of California women's basketball team cruised to a 93-73 win as the offense was fueled by dominating performances from
Taylor Donnot and
Sandra Ikeora.
With Dominican improving to 12-10 overall and 8-7 in the PacWest, the result puts the team in seventh place in the conference standings. The Penguins are now 6-4 on the road this season.
Donnot, a senior guard from Loomis, finished with a team-high 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds. The point total matched her career best. Saturday's performance for Donnot also represented her third double-double showing in the last five games.
A junior forward out of Valencia, Ikeora put together her top shooting effort of the year on Saturday in Fresno as she went 10-for-13 from the field and finished with 27 points. She also added 17 rebounds for her 15th double-double performance of 2016-17.
The offensive success extended to the entire Dominican roster as the visitors shot 50.8 percent from the field while going 6-for-11 from three-point range.
The Penguins held a slim 23-22 edge over Fresno Pacific after the first quarter. Then Dominican elevated the offensive output, outscoring the Sunbirds 26-12 in the second frame. Midway through that second quarter, Donnot scored nine-consecutive points for the Penguins.
Dominican staked a key advantage in the paint, outscoring the Sunbirds 46-24 in that area of the court. FPU managed to hold the Penguins scoreless through the final four minutes of the third quarter and that cut the Dominican lead to nine heading into the final frame.
The margin fell to three points about midway through the fourth quarter but Dominican turned away the challenge from the Sunbirds. The visitors rattled off a 13-0 run that started with six-straight points from Ikeora and then the spurt continued with a three-pointer by
Jade Castro.
Castro totaled 14 points while
Carly Holboke added 11 points to become one of the four Penguins in double-digit scoring.
As the PacWest standings continue to shuffle, Dominican's next opponent will be Holy Names on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. in Oakland.
