SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Dominican University of California women's basketball team earned a hard-fought win in overtime Thursday, topping Concordia 93-88 at the Conlan Center.
The Penguins sank 11 three-pointers through the contest, including a pair from
Alanna Scott in overtime that helped lift Dominican to victory. Concordia used a long-distance shot to tie the score and force the extra period, but the Penguins showed their resiliency and prevailed.
The result puts Dominican at 14-11 overall and 10-8 in the PacWest Conference. The Eagles fall to 9-14 overall and 7-10 in league play. Trailing sixth-place Academy of Art by a few percentage points, the seventh-place Penguins continue to battle for a spot in the six-team PacWest Tournament.
Sandra Ikeora totaled 28 points and 17 rebounds for yet another double-double effort on Thursday night. Sophomore guard
Natalie Diaz netted her third double-double showing of the season, totaling 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior
Carly Holboke racked up 22 points, including six of the team's 11 three-pointers. It marked the third time in the past month that she has reached that total of triples. Also posting double-digit points on Thursday was
Jade Castro, who also contributed a team-high four assists.
The two teams traded the lead in the first quarter and after an 18-18 tie ensued in the final minute, Ikeora sank a jumper with 20 seconds remaining to give Dominican a lead heading into the break.
The Penguins' defense held the Eagles to zero field goals through the first five and a half minutes of the second quarter, widening the home team's lead to 37-29 going into halftime.
Concordia reversed the momentum early in the third quarter, rattling off a 9-0 run to take a one-point edge. The squads exchanged the lead once again, until the Eagles got a layup with a few seconds on the clock and held a 59-57 heading into the fourth quarter. The Concordia lead widened to 11 points with only 5:53 to play in regulation but the Penguins never quit.
Dominican managed a 15-2 run, which was capped off with a Castro three-point play to tie the score and then a Castro jumper to return the lead to the Penguins. Although Concordia earned the game-tying basket in the final moments, Dominican stole the show in overtime. Ikeora scored on the first possession and the Penguins went 5-for-8 from the floor, including the pair of three-pointers by Scott.
Dominican resumes its homestand on Thursday, Feb. 23 with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Fresno Pacific. It will be Beach Night at the Conlan Center.
