Penguins win fourth straight

Box Score FRESNO, Calif. -- Dominican women's basketball won their fourth straight game overall and third consecutive to start PacWest play, defeating Fresno Pacific 82-62 Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.

Junior Natalie Diaz led the Penguins (7-2, 3-0 PacWest) with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Senior Sandra Ikeora also recorded a double-double with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Junior Anjelica Collins finished with a tremendous all-around game, tallying 16 points on 8-10 shooting while also adding eight assists and seven rebounds. Jessica Malazarte led the Sunbirds (3-8, 1-2 PacWest) with 13 points.

The first half was tightly contested as neither team was able to make a run to create much separation. Dominican took an 8-5 lead in the first quarter on a layup from Collins and Ikeora later hit a jumper to stretch the Penguins' lead to 14-10. Diaz collected an offensive rebound off her own miss, drawing a foul and knocking down two free throws with just one second remaining in the period, allowing Dominican to take a 17-13 lead into the second quarter.

The Sunbirds opened the frame with back-to-back baskets, taking an 18-17 advantage on a 3-pointer from Landynn Munster. After the Penguins later jumped back in front on a basket from Diaz, Munster hit another triple as Fresno Pacific seesawed back in front at 24-22. A layup from senior Alexis Price gave the Penguins a 35-28 lead, their largest of the afternoon, with just over two minutes left before the break as Dominican closed the half with a strong push.

In the third quarter, Ikeora extended Dominican's lead to 41-32 with a finish in the paint and Diaz gave the Penguins their first double-digit advantage shortly after, knocking down a turnaround jumper to make it 44-34. A couple of possessions later, Ikeora ripped down an offensive rebound and put it back in, pushing the lead to 47-34. With less than two minutes left in the quarter, Ikeora took a defensive rebound coast-to-coast, eventually finding Diaz underneath the rim for an easy layup as the Dominican went ahead 53-38. It looked like the Penguins would take a comfortable lead into the fourth but the Sunbirds went on an 11-0 run in the final 1:42 of the period, capped by a 3-pointer from Bree Alvarez, cutting their deficit to 53-49.

Dominican responded quickly in the fourth quarter as Price hit a floater early in the frame to give the Penguins a 57-51 lead. Dominican then got a defensive stop and moved the ball quickly in transition, leading to a layup from Collins as the lead grew to eight. The Penguins' lead was extended back to double-digits nearly halfway through the quarter as a layup from Diaz made it 66-55. Freshman Julia Razo helped put the game away, nailing a 3-pointer to put Dominican on top 73-59 with just over three minutes left. On the next Penguins' possession, Collins found Ikeora with a no-look pass, leading to a layup to stretch the lead to 16 and helping to seal it.

Dominican shot 41.9 percent from the field while holding Fresno Pacific to just 30.4 percent. The Penguins finished with a 62-40 rebounding advantage as they hauled in 20 offensive boards, leading to 18 second chance points. Dominican also outscored the Sunbirds 42-16 in the paint.

The Penguins will take the court again Tuesday as they host Bethesda at 5:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available online.
