Penguins fall to Eagles in final game of road trip

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-1 (13-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21) to Biola in a mistake-filled match at Chase Gymnasium.

Both teams struggled to find the court with the Eagles finishing with a .106 hitting percentage and the Penguins finished with a .088 percentage. Aimee Steinwand finished with a double-double with a match-high 13 kills to go with her 13 digs on a .231 hitting percentage. Josie Walser added 31 assists, two service aces and three blocks for Dominican.

Karly Dantuma led Biola with 12 kills, while Hanna van Warmerdam and Sabrina Winslow each added 10. Winslow also finished with 13 digs for the Eagles.

The Penguins started the match hot, capitalizing on a couple Eagle errors to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The teams continued trading points until Brittany Latigue and Kate Even had back-to-back kills in a 3-point burst that made it 16-8 in favor of Dominican. The Penguins finished with several small runs to increase their lead and a Biola attack error gave them the 25-13 set win.

Walser had two aces to begin the second set and give Dominican a 3-0 lead. The Eagles battled back to tie the set 8-8 on Sierra Bauder's kill. Biola then took the 13-11 lead after a Penguin attack error and a kill from Warmerdam. Steinwand and Latigue combined for back-to-back kills late in the set to tie the match again at 20, but Karly Dantuma answered with a kill and another Penguin error gave Biola just enough breathing room for the 25-23 set victory.

After trading the first few points in the third set, a 6-1 run led by strong blocking from Bauder gave the Eagles a 9-4 advantage. Biola increased its lead to as many as eight points twice and cruised to a 25-18 victory to take the 2-1 set advantage.

Steinwand sparked a 3-0 run early in the fourth set to give Dominican a 4-2 lead and several Eagle errors pushed the lead to four shortly afterward. Winslow bookended a couple of Penguin errors with kills to tie the set 8-8 and the teams began to trade points. Errors changed the tide again as the Eagles were able to capitalize on a few more to take a 17-13 lead. Catherine Johnson had back-to-back kills to cut the lead to two, but it was as close as Dominican could get as they fell 25-21.

Dominican will return home to host Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. PST Thursday at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
