Dominican sweeps Point Loma in season finale

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball wrapped up their season with a sweep (29-27, 28-26, 25-22) of Point Loma at the Conlan Center on Saturday.
 
The Penguins (10-18, 9-11 PacWest) got off to a good start, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first set with a service ace from senior Aimee Steinwand, forcing the Sea Lions (12-16, 9-11 PacWest) to take a timeout. Point Loma responded out of the break with four consecutive points before Steinwand ended the run with a kill. A kill from junior Brittany Latigue later put Dominican ahead 14-10 before the Sea Lions made another 4-0 run to tie it back up. After Point Loma moved ahead on an attack error from the Penguins, junior Kate Even notched a kill to even the set at 19-19. The Sea Lions later moved ahead 24-22 on a kill from Sophie Wingert, forcing Dominican to use a timeout. The Penguins got a kill from junior Cat Thomason after the break to bring them within one. Freshman Hana Wyles made an outstanding dig to keep a rally alive, eventually leading to a block from Even and Thomason to tie the set at 24-24, leading to a Point Loma timeout. After both sides went back and forth, Even tallied a kill to put Dominican on top 28-27 and sophomore Zoe Burgess ended it with a service ace.
 
The Sea Lions took early control of the second set, moving in front 6-1 on a kill from Alyssa Keturakis. The Penguins slowly chipped away, pulling within 9-8 on a kill from senior Susanna Pilkerton and tying it 10-10 on a kill from Latigue, forcing Point Loma to burn a timeout. The Sea Lions looked like they would pull away as a service ace from Alyssa Rifilato put Point Loma ahead 18-14, forcing the Penguins to take a timeout. Dominican was able to cut the Sea Lions' lead to 19-18 on a kill from Even and Steinwand later brought the Penguins to within 23-22 and 24-23 with kills of her own. Latigue and Thomason then tied it up at 24-24 as they combined for a block and Thomason followed that up with a kill to put Dominican ahead. With the match tied 26-26, Point Loma committed an attack error and Even ended the set with a kill.
 
Two straight service aces from Even gave the Penguins a 9-5 lead in the third set and a block from Latigue and freshman Josie Walser made it 10-5, leading to an early timeout from the Sea Lions. Point Loma climbed back into the set, trimming their deficit to 12-11 on a block from Madelynn Fox. Thomason helped the Penguins stretch the lead back out with a kill to make it 15-12. After the Sea Lions got a kill from Julia Malinas to tie it back up at 16-16, Dominican made a 3-0 run, started by a kill from Even. The Penguins got help from their two seniors late as Pilkerton came up with a kill to put the Penguins ahead 22-19 and Steinwand added another to make it 23-20. Even ended the set and match with two consecutive kills, completing the sweep.
