Box Score BELMONT, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-21, 26-24, 25-22 Friday night to Notre Dame de Namur at Walter Gleason Gym.
The Penguins (10-17, 8-11 PacWest) hit .211 for the match, but the Argonauts (17-10, 12-7 PacWest) ended the match with a .252 hitting percentage.
Kate Even led Dominican with 11 kills, while Josie Walser had 34 assists and Hana Wyles ended with 20 digs. Bianca Alvarez led Notre Dame de Namur with a match-high 27 kills.
The Penguins took advantage of early attack errors by the Argonauts to take a 4-2 lead and Even kept them in the lead with strong blocking and attacking for the next several points. Rowan Jack tied the match at 10 with an ace, but
Brittany Latigue found the floor on two kills in a 3-point burst to retake the lead for Dominican. NDNU flipped the momentum with an 8-0 run behind strong defense to take a 22-17 lead and held off the Penguins for the first set victory.
Cat Thomason and
Aimee Steinwand each had a pair of kills to send Dominican on a 6-1 run early in the second set to give Dominican a four-point advantage. Bianca Alvarez provided the response for NDNU with three kills in a 4-0 run to tie the match at 14, but the Penguins quickly retook a 17-14 lead. Latigue gave Dominican set point with a kill to make it 24-21, but a couple of blocks and an error helped propel NDNU on a 5-0 run to take a 2-0 set lead.
The Argonauts rode four kills by Alvarez to open the third set to take a 5-2 lead early. Steinwand and Catherine Johnson bookended an Alvarez error with kills to tie the match up at 7 before Even and Steinwand gave the Penguins a 9-8 lead with back-to-back kills. Latigue had a block and a kill to lead Dominican on a 5-1 run to increase the lead to 14-10 and force an Argonaut timeout. NDNU came out of the timeout and took advantage of a couple service errors to stop the run and tie the match with a 5-1 burst of their own. Alvarez then had two kills in a 3-0 run to give NDNU a 23-20 lead and it held on for the sweep.
Dominican will wrap up its season Saturday against Point Loma at 2 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
