Penguins drop three tight sets to Chaminade

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell in three sets (25-21, 28-26, 25-18) to Chaminade at the Conlan Center on Saturday night.

The teams went back-and-forth to start the night before junior Kate Even and senior Aimee Steinwand each recorded kills to give the Penguins (9-17, 8-10 PacWest) a 6-4 lead. The Silverswords (15-11, 10-8 PacWest) later capped a 4-0 run with a pair of service aces from Isabella Tessitore to move ahead 9-8. Chaminade's lead would eventually grow to 13-10 on a kill from Rachel Reedy. Dominican was quickly able to knot it back up at 15-15 on a kill from freshman Catherine Johnson before Steinwand tallied one of her own to give the Penguins the lead. After the Silverswords later jumped ahead 24-19, Dominican was able to cut it to 24-21 on a kill from junior Brittany Latigue and an attack error from Chaminade. The Silverswords then got a kill from Terezie Cernosek to end the set.

The Penguins got off to a good start in the second set as junior Cat Thomason sent home a kill to give Dominican a 5-3 lead. Chaminade followed with back-to-back errors, making it 7-3. After the Penguins later went ahead 10-7 on a kill from Johnson, the Silverswords fought to tie it back up at 11-11 on a kill from Emma Tecklenburg, forcing Dominican to take a timeout. With the set knotted at 13-13, Chaminade used a 4-0 run to regain the lead, capped by a kill from Kiana Drumheller. The Penguins got right back into it as a kill from Even cut the Silverswords' lead to 19-18 and Johnson followed with another to tie it up, forcing a timeout from Chaminade. After the break, Even notched another kill and followed it up with a service ace, leading to another Silverswords' timeout. Even came out of that break with another service ace to put Dominican up 22-19. After Chaminade cut the Penguins lead to 24-23 on a kill from Brooke Bell, Tecklenburg tied it up with a kill of her own. With the score tied 25-25, Bell recorded a block to give the Silverswords the advantage and force Dominican to take a timeout. Kira Long later recorded back-to-back kills to end it, giving Chaminade the set.

The Silverswords took the lead early in the third set as a kill from Drumheller put them ahead 7-5. The Penguins quickly responded with a 3-0 run to regain the lead at 8-7. Chaminade later took a 13-11 lead on a kill from Reedy and the Penguins followed with an error to give the Silverswords a three-point edge. The lead grew to 17-11 after the break on another kill from Tecklenburg before Chaminade committed a service error to end their 5-0 run. A pair of errors from the Silverswords helped Dominican get back in it at 21-16 and Laituge later combined with Johnson to cut Chaminade's lead to 22-18, forcing a timeout. The Silverswords responded after the break with three consecutive points to take the set and match.
