Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Dominican women's volleyball lost for the first time at home this season as No. 5 Cal Baptist swept the Penguins 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15) at the Conlan Center.
Â
Senior
Aimee Steinwand led the Penguins (4-10, 3-3 PacWest) with nine kills, nine digs, and three assists on an otherwise quiet offensive match for Dominican. Freshman
Josie Walser finished with 23 assists, three kills and four digs. Defensively, junior
Kate Even led Dominican with two blocks in the match.
Â
Cal Baptist's (15-0, 7-0 PacWest) Lauren Hackett had a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs. She was one of three Lancers to earn double-digit kills in the match, as McKenna and Madison Witt added 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Â
Both teams took small leads in the first set, but Cal Baptist pulled ahead on the first of many 3-point runs in the set to move ahead 10-7. With the help of a couple kills from Steinwand and freshman
Catherine Johnson, the Penguins kept close most of the way. A kill by CBU's Elizabeth Gilley helped the Lancers pull away with a 21-17 lead. The Penguins made a late run and Walser made it 24-20 with a kill, but Cal Baptist would take the first set victory 25-20.
Â
The second set played out similarly as Dominican would keep Cal Baptist from pulling away for most of the set. Each team went back and forth with their 3-point runs. The Penguins did not hesitate to take advantage of attack errors from the Lancers, using four such errors to pull within one at 18-17, and forcing a Cal Baptist timeout. The Lancers cleaned up their play to build a small lead and take the set 25-20.
Â
Dominican tried to keep the third set close early on, but back-to-back kills from McKenna Witt would kick-start a commanding 13-6 lead for the Lancers. The Penguins did not give up easily, as three attack errors from Hackett helped Dominican go on a 5-point surge to cut the lead 13-11. However, Cal Baptist capitalized on its chances in a 10-1 run to take a commanding lead on its way to the match victory.

The Penguins will host Hawaii Hilo Sunday at 7 p.m. PDT. Live stats and video will be available online.
