Box Score Belmont, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer lost 2-1 to Dixie State on Tuesday at Koret Field on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur.
The Penguins (3-7, 0-6 PacWest) applied pressure early, earning a corner kick and putting a shot on goal in the first five minutes. However, it was the Trailblazers (8-2, 4-2 PacWest) getting on the board first in the 18
th minute, capitalizing on a Dominican misplay as Dominic Damato chipped his first goal of the season into an empty net.
Sophomore Arturo Contreras got a shot away in the 23
rd minute off a corner kick but the attempt went high. Just over a minute later, sophomore
Colin Gunby saw his attempt at a header go wide. Junior
Damian Cortez also had a shot go wide in the 39
th minute. Just before the break, in the 41
st minute, the Trailblazers added to their lead on a cross that was converted by Ather Dawood for his second goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Dominican had a few opportunities early in the second half but missed a shot wide, had one blocked and another saved by Dixie State goalkeeper Zach Nielson. Senior
Zach Bush put a shot on net in the 76
th minute but Nielson made another save. The Penguins were able to push a goal across in the 89
th minute as Cortez recorded his second goal of the season, making it 2-1. Unfortunately, Dominican ran out of time in their attempt to find the game-tying goal.
