HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-22), on Thursday at Cal State East Bay in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
Dominican (4-1) was out of rhythm early and fell behind 16-9. A combo block from
Hannah Smith and Shannon Riggio-Kerley followed by an
Aimee Steinwand kill brought the Penguins even at 20-20 but the Pioneers (2-3) finished on a 5-1 run. The Pioneers grabbed control of set two with an early 7-0 run and finished on an 8-1 run that saw the Penguins fall behind 2-0 for the first time this season. Dominican led 21-19 in set three but the Pioneers called timeout and responded with a 7-1 run that closed out the match.
The Penguins missed the presence of senior libero
Amanda Lee, the reigning PacWest Libero of the Year. Lee is expected back for the rest of the weekend.
Alexa LoGiudice held her own in the libero jersey and had 18 digs. Freshman
Zoe Burgess also saw time in the back row and had three digs and a service ace in her first career appearance. Steinwand was the only Penguin in double-digit kills with 11 and had a double-double with 18 digs.
Deja Thompson and Kiki Leuteneker led CSUEB with 10 kills apiece.
Dominican continues the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase on Friday at 9 a.m. vs. Cal State Monterey Bay.
On Saturday, Dominican concludes its non-conference schedule vs. Cal State San Marcos at 10:30 a.m. and Saint Martin's at 5 p.m.
Live stats and
